Thelma Virginia Chavis Morton, the daughter of the late James Matt Chavis, Jr. and the late Martha Jane Satterwhite Chavis was born on May 25, 1931, in Oxford, North Carolina. On January 3, 2022, God in His infinite wisdom called her home to join the Heavenly Host. Awaiting her arrival were her parents and siblings (Dr. James M. Chavis, Mr. Randolph Chavis, Mrs. Lauretta Pinkney, and Mr. Herbert Chavis). Thelma was the eldest of five children, and the last to leave this earth. She received her formal education from the Oxford School System, graduating from the Toler High School in Oxford, North Carolina. Thelma later attended Cosmetology School in Raleigh, North Carolina, where she received her license. On January 22, 1955, Thelma and Jyles were united in holy matrimony in Oxford, North Carolina by the Reverend Batt Greene. They enjoyed 67 years of blissful marriage together. Their union was blessed with two daughters, Janice and Dellareese. Thelma began her spiritual growth as a member of the New Corinth Baptist Church in Granville County, North Carolina. Determined to maintain church affiliation after relocating to Baltimore, Maryland, both she and Jyles joined the Douglas Memorial Community Church. Later, in continuing their Christian journey, they transferred their membership, and began worshipping at the Concord Baptist Church in Northwest Baltimore. Her work experience began in East Baltimore at Lois’ Beauty Salon, as a beautician. Over the years, Thelma held various positions. In addition to working with the late Senator Paul Sarbanes in community organizations, she accepted a position and diligently worked as a Teacher’s Assistant in the Baltimore City School System. It was at Cecil Elementary School and Montebello Elementary School (two of her favorites) where her deep passion for education and early childhood development was manifested, cultivated and exhibited. Thelma spent many hours attentively teaching every child she encountered. In addition to working with students, she helped guide and train teaching staff in developing skills to ensure the children received exceptional attention and assistance with their individualized activities. Thelma remained focused and committed in her endeavors throughout the years, subsequently ending her tenure in retirement at the age of 62. Notably – even while working, Thelma continued pursuing her higher education by taking classes at Johns Hopkins University, Coppin State College and Baltimore City Community College – coming just shy of obtaining an Associate Degree. Being completely family-oriented, Thelma truly enjoyed spending quality time with those who were nearest and dearest to her. Obvious to most, she shared a special connection with the one she thought could do no wrong – her only grandson – Jamaal. Undoubtedly, the bond shared between Thelma and her family members will always be treasured and remembered. To send flowers or a memorial gift to the family of Thelma V.
