Stephen Zrebiec, 64 of Elgin, IL passed away on October 13, 2022 with his partner and soul-mate of over 25 years, Calvin Lazenby, after a valiant battle with a particularly aggressive brain cancer. Born and raised in South Amboy, NJ, he graduated from St. Mary’s High School, Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ with a BS in Economics, and New York University with an MS in Economics. He is predeceased by his parents, Edward and Mary (Nebus) Zrebiec. Steve is survived by Calvin Lazenby and by his siblings and their spouses – James A. and Kathleen Zrebiec of Leonardo, NJ, Catherine and Frank Fleming of Middletown, DE, Margaret and Ted Shearer of Marlton, NJ, and Virginia Zrebiec of South Amboy, NJ. Also surviving are nephews Jim, Matt, and Jeff Zrebiec, Mark, Greg, and Kevin Fleming, David Shearer and niece Kate (Shearer) McHale. Steve was a lifelong member of the property/casualty insurance industry and at the time of his death, was Product Manager for Workers Compensation for Tokio Marine America, a member of one of the largest insurance groups in the world. He has held postings for various companies in New York City, Charlotte, NC, Baton Rouge, LA, Austin, TX, Chicago, IL, and Jersey City, NJ. He was very active in industry committees and earned the insurance professional gold standard certificate, the CPCU. Steve belonged to the Unitarian Universalist Society of Geneva, where he was a trustee. Steve wrote plays that were performed for his church. He enjoyed being a fan of the Bears, Cubs, and Seton Hall Pirates basketball. Steve strongly stood for social justice and tolerance, and was a self-proclaimed “political junkie”, closely following national developments. He was occasionally a guest on the Mark Halperin Focus Group Show, where he gave progressive encouragement and explanation of important issues. He was an extremely hard and competitive worker, whether it was in his specialty area of workers comp, or whether he was playing chess, tennis or doing a jigsaw puzzle. Calvin and Steve enjoyed hiking and travel. Friends are invited to pay their respects at the Kurzawa Funeral Home 338 Main Street, South Amboy, NJ 08879 from 4-7PM on Monday, October 17, 2022. A 10AM Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, October 18 at Sacred Heart Church, South Amboy. A burial will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Parlin, NJ at the Nebus family gravesite where his parents are buried.
