View Tribute Book SISTER DORIS LAVINTHAL MPF Sr. Doris Lavinthal, MPF, 93, died peacefully on Wednesday, October 5, 2022, at St. Joseph Hall, Villa Walsh, Morristown, N.J. The viewing will be held on Tuesday, October 11, beginning with a prayer service at 1:00 p.m., at Villa Walsh, in St. Lucy Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 4:00 p.m. Interment will be at Ave Maria Cemetery following the Liturgy. Arrangements are by Doyle Funeral Home, Morristown, NJ. A native of Trenton, NJ, Sr. Doris entered the Religious Teachers Filippini in 1950. She received the habit in 1951 and made her religious profession in 1954. Sr. Doris earned a BS degree in Education from the College of St. Elizabeth in Convent Station, NJ, and a MS in Counselor Education from Marywood College in Scranton, PA. In her 71 years of religious life, Sr. Doris ministered as a classroom teacher, Principal, and Director. She was missioned in the (arch)dioceses of Hartford, Newark, Ogdensburg, and Paterson. Sr. Doris faithfully served the Community in several leadership roles: Supervisor of Schools, Provincial Councillor and Treasurer for the Religious Teachers Filippini for three terms, and local superior in Watertown, NY, and Pequannock, NJ. Sr. Doris’s passion for education was demonstrated by her commitment to the students, parents, faculty and staff where she ministered. Her most extensive tenure was at Villa Walsh Academy in Morristown, NJ, where she served as Principal from 1976 until 1990, when she was appointed Director. Generations of students were the recipients of her visionary leadership and dedication to Catholic education in accord with the charism of St. Lucy Filippini, foundress of the Religious Teachers Filippini. In 2013, the newly-constructed athletic center was dedicated in her honor and named the “Sr. Doris Lavinthal Athletic Center.” Sr. Doris is predeceased by her parents Leon and Lottie (Fischer) Lavinthal, and her brother Arthur. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Anita, her niece, nephew, grandniece, and grandnephew. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Sr. Doris may be made to the Religious Teachers Filippini, c/o Sister Patricia Pompa, MPF, Villa Walsh, 455 Western Avenue, Morristown, NJ 07960.
