Obituary Shirley Diane Garner, age 79, of rural New Canton, IL passed away on Friday, October 28, 2022 at her home. She was born on March 14, 1943 in Quincy, IL to George and Mildred Lease Davis. She first married Larry Kabrick and to this union two daughters were born. She later married Russell Garner on June 17, 1981 and he survives. Diane graduated from Payson-Seymour High School in 1961 and went on to attend Quincy Beauty Academy becoming a certified beautician. She worked in Payson for a little while before putting a shop in her mother’s house. She later had a shop in the Hull area and then in New Canton. Diane married Russell in 1981 and the same year she received her Bachelor’s Degree from Quincy University with a double major in Sociology and Psychology. In the mid-1980’s, she and Russell opened an ice cream shop in New Canton called the ‘Mississippi Ripple’ with Ralph and Shirley Garner. Diane was a member of the New Canton United Methodist Church where she was an ordained Lay Minister. She was active in her church and played the piano and organ for over 30 years as well as sang in the choir. Diane also played piano and organ for many weddings, church events, and funerals and gave private lessons in her home for many years. She helped with many fundraisers and led music and Bible studies at Barry Community Care Center. She was a member of the Red Hat Society and was also in charge of the parades for the New Canton Harvest Festival for over 20 years. Diane and Russell raised hogs and cattle on the Garner Farm. She loved animals having many cats, dogs, fish and rabbits as pets. She and Russell loved to go out to eat with a group of friends that went out weekly and she enjoyed painting and puzzles as well. She was very competitive and loved playing games with her family. Diane greatly loved her family and friends and will be missed dearly. She is survived by her loving husband of 41 years, Russell Garner; two daughters, Lisa (Scott) Martin of Troy, MO and Jennifer Kabrick of Quincy, IL; grandchildren, James (Beth) Martin, Eric Martin, Christine Skiles, Sam Kroner, and Garett Garner; great grandchildren, Nick Martin, Violet Skiles, and Kaylie Eisele; and great great grandchildren, Lila Collier and Grace Beelman; brothers, Neil Davis of Quincy, IL and Jon (Charlot) Davis of Springfield, MO; sisters, Doris Vahle and Joyce (Richard) Stephens, both of Quincy, IL; and special friends, Pauline Little and Christie Kirby. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Mildred Davis; stepson, Scott Garner; sister-in-law, Pat Davis; and brother-in-law, Robert Vahle. Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 3, 2022 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Niebur Funeral Chapel in Barry. Cremation rites have been accorded and interment will be at a later date. Memorials are suggested to be made to Blessing Hospice, New Canton United Methodist Church, or Kate’s Kitties and K-9’s. Online condolences may be left to the family at www.nieburfh.com.
