Roger’s Obituary Roger Lee Steele, age 84, of Lenoir passed away Saturday, October 8, 2022 at Shaire Center. He was born April 25, 1938 in Caldwell County to the late Lee Green Steele and Edna Jane Carlton Steele. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by one sister, Jeanette Steele Land; and one great-niece, Bailey Reis. Roger grew up on his father’s farm in Lenoir and graduated high school from Oak Hill School in 1956. After graduation, he was employed with Western Electric Company in the “Government Communications Division” one of his projects being the space program communications equipment for the astronauts. He travelled extensively and met his wife in Hawaii where he swept her off her feet with his charm and southern accent. His work took him all over the US and abroad with his family working on government projects such as the Anti-Ballistic Missile effort. In 1978, he was presented with a humanitarian award for saving the life of a little girl drowning in a pool. He went on to work as an engineer for Bell South and AT&T in Miami, Florida until his retirement in 1995. Roger developed many hobbies during his life including boating, deep sea fishing, computers, woodworking, clocks, golf, pool, shooting, playing the fiddle, and being a family historian. He provided a fun and exciting life for his wife and two daughters and will always be remembered as the life of the party. After retirement, he and his wife built a house in Lenoir on family land where he very happily spent his remaining years tending to the land and pursuing his extensive hobbies including writing several volumes of the Steele family history. Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 57 years, Judy Gallo Steele, of the home; two daughters, Christine Gates and husband Brad of Lenoir, and Regina Parker of Jackson, FL; one brother, David Carlton Steele and wife Elizabeth of Lenoir; three beloved grandchildren, Alexandria ton and husband Adam, Courtney Parker, and Gavin Parker; one great-grandson, Anderson Dominic ton and one on the way, Sol ton; two nieces, Becky Reis and husband Walter of Blowing Rock, and Melanie Land of Granite Falls; and one nephew, John David “J.D.” Steele and wife Laura, of Colorado. Funeral services will be held Friday, October 14, 2022 at 2:00 P.M. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Father Stephen Hoyt. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 1:00 to 2:00 P.M. at the funeral.
