Obituary Cumberland, MD – Robert Leo McGreevy, 90, of Cumberland, passed away at UPMC Western Maryland Sunday, July 10th, due to complications from COVID-19. Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Marian Bernard (McKenty) McGreevy; his parents, Patrick Owen and Agnes (Byrne) McGreevy; and brothers Owen, Paul, Ted, Kevin, and Eugene; and sisters Margaret, Agnes, Nancy, and Helen. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was also preceded in death by a nephew, Timothy McGreevy, with whom he was very close. Born July 19, 1931, in Keyser, WV, he grew up in Westernport, Cresaptown, and Cumberland, where he attended LaSalle High School. He joined the army in 1950 and was shipped to the battlefront in the Korean conflict. He was captured by enemy forces on November 5, 1950, at Unson, North Korea, by Chinese forces. He was 19 years old. Robert spent approximately 34 months living in captivity in Camp #5, Pyoktong, on the Yulu River. He credits his survival in large part to Father Emil Kapaun, a Catholic priest who was also a POW and who died in captivity. Upon his return to the United States, Robert saw his future wife, Marian McKenty, when a caravan of cars met him outside Cumberland to welcome him home. Marian was a proofreader at the Cumberland Times News and had known Robert since high school. She hoped to catch his attention that day so a reporter from the paper could interview him. Robert said he saw Marian in the caravan and thought she was the most beautiful girl he’d ever seen. They were married for 49 years before Marian died of leukemia in 2005. After being honorably discharged from the Army, Robert found employment with the US Postal Service, where he worked for 35 years. He served as a Supervisor at a postal facility in Prince Georges County at the time of his retirement. In his spare time, Robert took up long distance running and was a founding member of the Queen City Striders, a local running group. He ran several marathons, including the Boston Marathon. Robert is survived by two daughters, Pamela Newhouse and husband Dirk, Ligonier, PA; and Kimi-Scott McGreevy and husband Frank Clark, Cumberland, MD; six grandchildren, Jessica Hinze, Loveland, CO; Elizabeth Newhouse, Loveland, CO; Shaine Newhouse, San Antonio, TX; Caitlin Clark, Washington, DC; Kerrigan Clark, Bloomington, IN; and Regan Clark, Charlottesville, VA. Robert is also survived by his devoted companion, Carol Burleson, Carpendale, WV. At Robert’s request, there will be no visitation. He will be interred at the Rocky Gap Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Robert’s memory to the Korean War Veterans Memorial Foundation, www.koreanwarvetsmemorial.org, or Korean War Veterans Memorial Foundation, 950 North Washington Street, Suite 220, Alexandria, VA 22314.
