Robert F. (Hodgie) Hodge, 71, a lifelong and well-known resident of Smyrna passed away December 23, 2022 at Chenango Memorial Hospital in Norwich. Robert was born in Smyrna on September 25, 1951, the son of Warren and Doris Foster Hodge. He grew up with 2 brothers and 3 sisters. Robert was a Cub scout and later a Boy Scout. By the age of 12, he was mowing lawns and delivering The Evening Sun within the Village. Later he began working for Nadine and Mac Farrow on the farm. During his Senior year, he worked for Bob Foster’s Gulf Garage in Earlville. Upon graduation from Sherburne-Earlville Central School, he joined the Air Force, where he served four years during the Vietnam Era. He received an Honorable Discharge in January 1975. In May of that year, he met Sheila Jaquay, the love of his life. They were married May 15, 1976. In 1976, he was hired by Stewart Blanchard at the Town of Smyrna Highway Department, working for Ken Jones. When Ken retired, he worked for Gary Graham for over 34 years. While working for the town, he also ran a NY State Inspection Station for 10 years. He was also a Smyrna Volunteer Fireman. Robert enjoyed the outdoors from riding motorcycles, snowmobiles and watching wildlife to fishing, hunting, gardening, cooking, canning and freezing. He loved his pets: dogs and cats. He enjoyed the time spent with Justin Warren Hodge and his family. He is survived by Sheila, his wife of 46 years; brothers, Louie (Nancy) and Alex (Robin); sisters, Cindy (Gregg) Ferris and Nancy Crandall; and several nieces, nephews and their families. He was predeceased by his parents, Warren and Doris Hodge and his sister, Tina Powell. At his request, there will be no calling hours or services. Burial will be at Willcox Cemetery. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Sherburne Emergency Squad or to the Smyrna Emergency Squad.
