Robert’s Obituary Robert E. Wagoner, 92, a resident of Westminster Woods, Huntingdon, died Friday morning, October 28, 2022, at The Oaks at Westminster Woods. He had been in failing health. Born August 31, 1930 in Chicago, IL, he was a son of the late Floyd Raymond Wagoner and Cleo Margarethe (Pickanue) Wagoner. He was united in marriage to the former Shirley Aileen Williams on June 15, 1952, at the First Church of the Brethren, Chicago, IL. Mrs. Wagoner preceded him in death on February 24, 2013. He is survived by a son, Nathan A. Wagoner of Minneapolis, MN; and three grandchildren, Lloyd Robert Wagoner, Agatha Cleo Wagoner and Jonathan Littler. He is also survived by his son-in-law, Robert Littler; daughter-in-law, Gabriele Kirsch; sister-in-law, Carol Ahlf; and the following nieces and nephews, Debbie Gordon, Rachelle Anson, Diane Kauric, Larry Martinez, Chris Martinez, Vicki Martinez, Suzanne Martinez, Greg Martinez and Brad Martinez. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Annamarie Wagoner-Littler, on December 4, 2008; and a brother, Ralph Waldo Wagoner, on May 15, 1994. Dr. Wagoner was a member of the Stone Church of the Brethren, Huntingdon. He received his BA from Manchester College, Manchester, Indiana, and his Ph.D. from Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass. Following his marriage to Mrs. Wagoner, the two made an epic overland journey in 1953 from Chicago to Paraguay via train, bus, car, boat, airplane, even crossing the Andes on dirt roads in a commercial truck, to visit the Bruderhof religious community. Dr. Wagoner began his teaching career as a Professor of Philosophy at Juniata College in 1965. He was instrumental in the creation and implementation of the new curriculum in the 1970’s. He developed and taught a number of required interdisciplinary courses, including Senior Value Studies, a major part of the reconstruction of the curriculum. He was also directly involved in the creation of the Program of Emphasis, currently still in place at Juniata. He also served as Department Chair and as Dean of the Humanities. During his tenure he came into contact with nearly every Juniata student for many years. Dr. Wagoner retired from Juniata College in August, 2018. With his good friend, the late George Dolnikowski, the two assembled a major touring exhibition of Russian Icons in 1988: Russian Icons of the Golden Age, which showed at Juniata College, The Frick Museum in Pittsburgh, the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., and other venues. Dr. Wagoner was the author of the following books, The Meanings of Love: An Introduction to Philosophy of Love, 1997, used in several Philosophy programs around the country; Community in Paraguay: A Visit to the Bruderhof (with Shirley A. Wagoner), 1991; Spinning and : Glimpses of Women, Work and Love in Bygone Times, 2011, written in memory of his late daughter, Annamarie, an enthusiastic collector of antique spinning reels. He was an art collector and world traveler. He traveled extensively throughout Europe, as well as Tunisia, India, Russia, Ukraine, South and Central America and the United States. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, February 18, 2023, at the Stone Church of the Brethren, 1623 Moore St., Huntingdon, with the Reverend Ben Lattimer officiating.
