Paul B. Gilbert, 72, of Boston, MA - formerly Lexington, MA - passed away on December 24, 2022 from complications of pancreatic cancer. He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years Patricia Romeo-Gilbert, and their children: Rebecca Gilbert and her husband Daniel Hore of Jamaica Plain, MA; Gregory Gilbert of Los Angeles, CA; Rachel Gilbert of Somerville, MA; and Jeffrey Gilbert of Jamaica Plain, MA. He is also survived by his mother Joy Stern Gilbert of Lexington, MA; and sisters Joanne Arnold and her husband Gordon of Reston, VA; and Susan Gilbert of Arlington, MA. Paul was the ecstatic grandfather of a wonderful grandson, and cherished his entire extended family including his numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews.

Throughout his life, Paul cared passionately about his community. He was a lifelong Boy Scout, earning the rank of Eagle as a youth and then volunteering throughout his adult life at the local and council level. He met the love of his life and found a second home when he attended undergrad at St. Lawrence University, and in January 1972 he joined the school’s inaugural study-abroad program in Kenya. He remained steadfast in his support for the school and the program for the next 50 years.

Paul was a proud fourth-generation business owner. An alumnus of the University of Wisconsin’s graduate real estate program, Paul remained invested in his alma mater, recruiting a student intern from the program each summer. He was patron of the arts with particular fondness for the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, and the American Repertory Theatre; as well as an avid Celtics and Red Sox fan. What he loved most was to travel – whether it be across the globe or to his favorite Adirondack chair next to Saranac Lake – knowing at the end of every trip he would arrive home to his family and his adoring cocker spaniels. He will be missed for his generosity, loyalty, and sense of humor.

Visiting hours will be held from Wednesday, December 28th 4PM-7PM at Douglass Funeral Home in Lexington, MA; and a memorial will be held Thursday, December 29th at 11:30AM at First Parish in Lexington, MA. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research.
