Joseph Norman “Norm” Mitchell, passed away on Saturday, October 8th at the age of 92. Norm was born in Knoxville, Tennessee to Joseph Carl and Mary Bunch Mitchell. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Nancy Rodgers Mitchell, his sister Sarah Lynn Mitchell Bourne of Knoxville, Tennessee, his sister and brother-in-law, Barbara Rodgers Murray and Roy Dean Murray of Byron Center, Michigan and a nephew Brandon Dean Murray of Allegan, Michigan. Norm was in the Korean war and received a Purple Heart, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, and a Bronze Campaign Star, he was always a patriotic American, he loved his country and his God. After service, he moved to Michigan where he met his wife, Nancy in church. He worked for K-Mart Corporation as a District Manager for cameras and jewelry. He helped open the first K-Mart in Michigan and eventually transferred to Georgia. One of his proudest achievements was being the President of his high school graduating class. He was able to have an annual reunion for 70 years until this year. He was a member of a Christian Men’s group that met every Monday morning at Brandi’s Restaurant. The name of the group is Chef-Christians Here Eat Frankfurters. He loved the fellowship with all his Christian men and made the meeting a regular part of his week. Norm was a “people person.” He enjoyed getting together with friends. Although he wasn’t a cook, he did specialize in making a Christmas fruit cake each year and sharing it with friends. He loved to travel, and we were fortunate to see the USA, Canada, Europe, and the Caribbean Islands. He always had a camera handy for pictures and we have volumes for keepsakes. Above all else, Norm was a Christian, he was a man of prayer. He was a member of Roswell Street Baptist Church for over 30 years. For the past 13 years, he and Nancy have been members of First Baptist Church in Marietta. He has been a faithful member of the Men’s Sunday School Class, Cup of Kindness, a ministry for shut-ins and feeding the homeless where he was known as “The big dipper!” Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Thursday, October 13, 2022, at First Baptist Church Sanctuary in Marietta, burial will be at a later date at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton. Friends will be received from 12:00 to 2:00 PM Thursday in the Sanctuary. Donations in his memory may be made to The Grateful First Building Campaign at Marietta First Baptist Church.
