She was born in Ferrum, Virginia December 5, 1935 the daughter of Charlie Emmett Carter and Gladys Lena Gibson. She was one of 14 children and is survived by her son, Erik Kritter; her sister, Linda Fay Fisher (Carter); and sisters-in-law, Reba Carter (Hudson), Arlene Carter (Guilliams), Vera Laprade (Guilliams) and Bernice Hedrick (Dalton). She Graduated from Franklin County High School in Rocky Mount. Following her graduation, she worked for the phone company in Martinsville and later moved to Washington, D.C. where she went to work for the World Band and International Monetary Fund for ten years. Her accounting position there enabled her to travel the world and visit many countries. But most importantly to her were the friends she made from all over the world. She Married Lt. Colonel Eugene John Kritter in 1970 and moved to Ohio where they had one son (Erik). In 1976 she lost her husband Gene to cancer. The next year she moved with her four-year-old son back to Franklin County, Virginia to be near her family. Where she joined the Rocky Mount Christian Church and raised her son. She worked as a legal Secretary for a while and also worked as a secretary at the Middle School. Later she joined the Blue Ridge Institute at Ferrum College as a Secretary/Office Manager. She worked there approximately 20 years and took great delight in helping to put on the Blue Ridge Folklife Festival and being involved in campus life at Ferrum. She retired from Ferrum in 1999. After retirement she took up painting and was involved with the Bald Knob Artists. Her favorite mediums were oils and acrylics. She also continued her lifelong love affair with gardening and was deeply involved with the Boones Mill Garden Club. She also served on the Boards of The Phoebe Needles Center and The Rocky Mount Christian Church. She was involved with many other organizations and clubs. Her son often joked that she was busier after she retired but that was probably not far from the truth. She also continued to love to travel and did so until late into her retirement. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at the Carter-Young Family Cemetery, Ferrum with Pastor Matthew Ricks officiating. Her family will receive friends 3-5 p.m. Saturday at Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
