Melvin was born December 18, 1934 in Amarillo, TX, to L.B. and Ocie (McBride) Townsend. He met and married Phyllis Lavonne Roark, in Las Vegas, NM on September 30, 1952 . She survives him of their home. He is preceded in death by his parents; sister Evis Townsend; two brothers John Townsend and Calvin Townsend; and one grandson Draper Schraff. Other survivors include one son Brad and his wife Linda Townsend of McIntosh, NM; one daughter Tammy and her husband Mathew Pinkey of Santee, CA; two brothers Leroy Townsend and his wife Sammy, and Robert Townsend and his wife Sue; four grandchildren, six great grandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren. Cremation has taken place and a family memorial service will be held at a later date. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Harris-Hanlon Mortuary in Moriarty, NM.
