View Tribute Book Pastor Melvin Arthur Schwark was called home on November 26th, 2022 with loved ones by his side. He was born at home on October 13th, 1935 to Walter and Johanna (Hoffman) Schwark in Marquette Township WI. He was an active member of St John’s Princeton, WI where he was baptized (November 3, 1935) and confirmed (April 10, 1949). At the age of 13 he attended Northwestern Preparatory School for his High School Education. He continued his education at Northwestern College and finished his training for the Ministry at Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary graduating in 1961. During his years at the Seminary and before he entered the parish ministry, Pastor Schwark served summer vicarships in San Manuel, Arizona; Ekalaka, Montana; Lincoln/Glennie, Michigan; and Brighton Township/Courtland, Minnesota. He also served as a tutor for a year at Northwestern Lutheran Academy in Mobridge, South Dakota and from 1961 to 1964 at Northwestern Preparatory School. In the summer of 1963, Pastor Schwark was ordained in Markesan, WI and received his first Call in 1964 to serve the churches of Zion Brighton Township and Courtland Lutheran in Minnesota. Pastor Schwark served his congregations and taught religion classes at Martin Luther Academy in New Ulm until 1968 when he served as a civilian chaplain in Vietnam and Thailand for a year. In 1969 he returned to his congregations in Minnesota and to teaching at MLA for two more years. From 1973-1993 Pastor Schwark served several congregations and schools throughout the midwest including: Trinity Lutheran in Lake City, MN (1973-1975), Dean of Students – Michigan Lutheran Seminary in Saginaw,MI (1975-1980), Omro Township and Granite Falls, MN (1980-1983), Zion Lutheran in Sanborn, MN (1983-1993). From 1993-1995 he was called to help spread the gospel as a missionary in Kiev Ukraine. In 1995 he returned to the Midwest to serve as Pastor at St. Johns in Cornell, WI until 2002. In 2002 he was Called back to his beloved congregations of Zion Brighton Township and Courtland Lutheran serving his parishioners until his retirement in 2018. Melvin Schwark married the love of his life, Elizabeth Zimmerman in Lansing, MI on August, 22nd 1971. The two shared 51 years of marriage and were blessed with eight children. Pastor Melvin Schwark was preceded in death by his father Walter, mother Johanna (Hoffman), an infant brother lost in childbirth, brother Carl, sister Carol (Revels), father and mother-in-law Pastor Frederick Zimmerman and Ivalo (Pommeranz), sister-in-law Jean (Zimpel), son-in-law Georgiy (Soloviyov), and other family members. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth (Zimmerman), his children Lori (Jim) Wetterau, Ann (Corey) Haselerhansen, Meliza (Nathan) Lane, Kathryn (Kevin) Bonavita, Mikal Schwark, Emma Ganey, Samuel Schwark, John (Jessica) Schwark. His brother Ralph Schwark. Grandchildren Tatyana (Jacob) Mueller, Amber Wetterau, Yuri and Sadie (Bolton) Soloviyov, Aleksei Soloviyov, and Katya Soloviyov, Christina Haselerhansen, Elise (Jake) Bush and Dorothea Haselerhansen, Alex and Ashley (Black) Lane, Abigail Lane, Andrew Lane, Vincent Bonavita, Victoria Bonavita, Simon Peter Schwark, Josefina Maria Schwark, Kaitlynn Ganey, Caleb Ganey, Judah Ganey, Malachi Schwark, Levi Schwark, Wilhelm Schwark, and Walter Schwark. Great-grandchildren Anita and Henrik Bush. Services will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 8781 Brunswick Road, Minocqua, WI 54548, on Friday, December 2nd at 11:00. We thank Our Lord for the many blessings he gave to Pastor Melvin Schwark and for the time we were blessed to share with him. Well done, good and faithful servant! In remembrance of Pastor Schwark’s life, the family asks that any charitable donations be made to the WELS Christian Aid and Relief Resource Center or the WELS Seminary for Tuition Assistance.
