Obituary Mary Loretta Simpson Wood,entered eternal rest on Friday morning, October 21, 2022, reuniting with her beloved husband, Henry, and her Savior Jesus Christ. She had just celebrated her 95th birthday surrounded by her dearest friends, enjoying cake and ice cream. She is believed to be the longest living person in her known family history. She is the last of a generation, having been the eighth of nine children born to Henry Simpson and Nola Coward. She was born on Oct 2, 1927 at the homeplace in St. Clair and never lived outside of Hawkins County. As a child, she rose before daylight on her family farm to milk 3 cows before going to school. It was a hard life that she loved. About 1945, she began her career at the Rogersville Hospital, where she worked for about 40 years, ending her career in the facilities department where she cleaned and sanitized medical devices and instruments. All her life, she remained a simple, humble, rural country girl. In 1975, she married Henry Wood and they became inseparable and loving soul mates, never being apart except for work. He predeceased her in 2018 leaving her to proudly live independently at home for the rest of her life. She was proud to be a Christian and a member of Adriel Baptist Church in Bean Station, having given her life to Christ at a young age at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church in St. Clair. Her church family was a great help in her later days and she really appreciated every act of kindness. She was especially grateful for the love and kindness shown by friends, Carl and Vonda Wolf, Tim and Christy Collins, Lonnie and Deanna Purkey, Hobart Winstead, Marsha Harrison, Crystal Fugate, Judy Purkey, Shirley Larson, and Misty and Brooklyn Macal. The family will receive friends from 12 – 1 p.m. Tuesday, October 25th at Westside Chapel Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. with Rev. Tim Collins officiating. Interment will follow in Courtney Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband and her parents. Arrangements by Westside Chapel Funeral Home in Morristown.
