Mary Kathleen Phelan, 22, of Wilmette, IL, passed away on March 26 after a tragic accident. Preceding her in death was her father Michael and grandfather, Patrick Phelan. She is survived by her mother Cynthia (nee Richwine) Phelan; her sister Erin and brother Sean; 10 cousins; aunt Jennifer (Brian) Condon; uncles Thomas (Diana) Phelan, Christopher (Colleen) Phelan, and Matthew (Nicole) Phelan; grandparents Richard and Janice Richwine, and Diane Phelan. Mary Kate graduated from Loyola Academy where she was a member of the crew team and the Dumbach Honor Program. She attended Creighton University in Omaha as a Journalism Major with an interest in Public Relations and as an intern with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Nebraska. Mary Kate was graduating in May. Mary Kate had a passion for life. One friend said it best, “you couldn’t keep MK in a box.” Mary Kate loved taking full advantage of life from the early morning Soul Cycle classes to making reservations at a trendy new restaurant. Her favorite activity was taking walks to Gillson Beach and just listening to the waves with an almond milk latte in hand. MK had an abundance of love and commitment to her family including her dog, Seamus, and friends. Her breathtaking smile, unique style, and endless energy will be sorely missed. Services will be held at St. Joseph Church in Wilmette on Saturday, April 2nd at 12:00 pm. If you choose, wear bright, cheerful colors to celebrate Mary Kate’s zest for life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are made to any of the following organizations special to the family: The Michael J Phelan ’84 Memorial Endowment at Loyola Academy, or in honor of Mary Kate’s endless love for Sean and Erin either alma maters, The Cove School in Northbrook, IL, or Regina Dominican HS in Wilmette, IL. Funeral Mass Saturday, April 2, 2022, 12 Noon at Saints Joseph and Francis Xavier Church (St. Joe’s Campus), 1747 Lake Avenue, Wilmette, IL 60091.
