Longtime Alaskan Mary (Pennington) Wellborn, 69, passed away in her sleep June 5, 2022, at Maple Springs of Wasilla. Having grown up in a large boisterous family, she sought the social activities of groups. Her last hours were spent with staff she loved, laughing, and sharing photos and stories. Mary was born in Boulder City, Nevada to Gladys and Charles Pennington. The family returned to Anchorage, Alaska in time to celebrate her first birthday. The family then drove the Alcan ‘highway’ in 1956 to Southern California in a school bus her father converted; perhaps one of the first RVs. It slept the family of 8 and included a kitchen and ‘pot.’ When the family returned to Anchorage in 1965, she attended Romig Junior High and West High School. As could be seen by her room decor at Maple Springs, Mary loved horses and spent much of her youth at Woronzoff Riding Stables next door to the family home, caring for and riding a beloved palomino horse, Ally. Mary was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Peggy. She is survived by her husband Earl (Bo) Wellborn; daughter Rachael, grandchildren Kandice, Michael, Charles, and Hope; sisters Jan, Gail, and Beth; brother Dann; and 6 nieces and nephews. Family and friends gathered at Earthquake Park Friday, July 8th to celebrate her life, where in her youth, she would ride Ally.
