Maria’s Obituary Maria passed away peacefully on Thursday December 23rd at the Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge. She was 77 years of age. Born and raised in Yauco, Puerto Rico, she was a beloved daughter of the late Juan Irizarry and Cruz Seda-Irizarry. She spent her early years in Yauco and came to New York in 1965, marrying Santos Irizarry and beginning to raise her family. She moved with her family to Chelsea in 1972 and resided there for several years before settling in Cambridge 20 years ago. Maria was a hardworking woman, working outside of her home as a Shift Supervisor at Sweetheart Paper and later working at Native Poultry in Chelsea. She was very active in the Chelsea Hispanic Community. She was a member of St. Rose Parish where she taught Sunday School, sang in the Choir, was a Eucharistic Minister, and she was a fondly remembered host and DJ for the St. Rose Radio Program “Abundancia”. She was a beloved “Seminarian Den Mother” for many years welcoming Hispanic seminarians from St. John’s Seminary in her home on weekends. Maria taught herself in the art of Spanish cooking, Her home and kitchen was always full of the aromas of her meals, where she fed many visitors and even prepared meals to be shared with neighbors and other families in need of a hot meal. She was the beloved wife of 55 years to Santos Irizarry, Sr. Devoted mother of Pedro Irizarry of Cambridge, Santos Irizarry of Brighton, and Martin Irizarry of Saugus. Cherished grandmother of Yarilda Irizarry, Sebastian Irizarry, and Jacob Irizarry. Dear sister of Efrain Irizarry, Elba Irizarry, Bermain Irizarry, Wilfreddy Irizarry, Angel Irizarry, and the late Luznery Irizarry, Juan Irizarry, Benjamin Irizarry, and Hector Irizarry. ARRANGEMENTS: Relatives and friends are most kindly invited to attend her visiting hours at the Welsh Funeral Home, 718 Broadway, Chelsea on Wednesday January 5th from 4 – 8 P.M. All visitors are required to wear face masks while in the Funeral Home, per order Chelsea Board of Health.
