Lila Pearl Burton December 7, 1945 – November 16, 2022 Share this obituary Send Flowers View/Sign Guestbook| Send Sympathy Card Lila Pearl Nicholson Burton was born in Louisburg, North Carolina on December 7. 1945, to Melvin “Ned” Nicholson and Willie Veola Perry Nicholson Wood. Pearl, as she was called by family was preceded in death by her husband, Deacon Robert N. Burton; mother and father (Melvin “Ned” and Willie “Veola”); two brothers (Leo & Joe Nicholson); a son Marvin Lenell Nicholson. Lila was born on Pearl Harbor Day, two years after the end of World War II. Her family moved to Virginia when she was a small child where she completed most of her public-school education, thus finishing it in Paterson, New Jersey. After public school, she worked various jobs in Paterson and surrounding localities. One job was with North Jersey Training School for behavioral disordered children. It was here that she decided to continue her education, Lila enrolled and graduated from Passaic County Community College in Paterson, NJ in 1975 with an Associate Degree in Applied Health and Radiology. After returning to Virginia in 1975, she met and eventually married Robert N. Burton. She was employed at the Hampton Veterans Administration Medical Center as an X-ray Technician for many years. Later she and Robert decided to become foster parents and over the course of many years, they cared for at least 28 children, adopting two (2) of them. Lila attended different churches in Hampton and Newport News, eventually joining Cornerstone Worship Center Intl Assembly (formally, Living Word Tabernacle) in Hampton, VA where she faithfully served as an Usher and worked with the food ministry until she was overcome by health challenges in 2020. She leaves a legacy of family love and unity. She is survived by one daughter, Tiana Nicole Burton of Richmond, VA; six of nine siblings: Lois (Raymond) Howe of Paterson, NJ; Annie (Lloyd) Thomas of Newport News, VA; Barbara (Michael) Anderson of Hampton, VA; Michael (Denise) Nicholson of Newport News, VA; Melvin (Edith) Nicholson of Smithfield, VA and Lawrence Nicholson of Hampton, VA; adopted children, Amber Ray Morrell-Burton and Keith Byrd- Burton of Hampton, VA; a host of nieces and nephews along with other relatives and friends, too numerous to name. Viewing will be held Friday, December 2, 2022 at Cornerstone Worship Center 55 Tide Mill Lane Hampton, VA 23666 from 11 am until start of service which will begin at 1 pm. Interment will follow at Hampton Memorial Gardens 155 Butler Farm Road Hampton, VA 23666.
