Lawrence “Larry” Charles Krapf, of Edwardsville, IL, passed away on December 16, 2022, at the age of 83 after a short but courageous battle with cancer. He was a caring husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He had a kind soul and to know him was to love him. Larry was born on February 17, 1939, in St. Louis, MO to the late Herbert and Marie Krapf. Larry married Betty Ann (Ashauer) Krapf on October 13, 1962, and proudly celebrated 60 years of marriage in 2022. In addition to his wife, Larry is survived by his three children: Larry Krapf of Columbia, MO: Randy Krapf of San Marcos, TX: Dana (Larry) Brown of Algonquin, IL; his brothers, Thomas Krapf of Edwardsville, IL and Raymond Krapf; several nieces and nephews; and his two grandchildren, Alexa Brown of Downers Grove, IL and Ashlyn Brown of Algonquin, IL, who were the light of his life. Larry was preceded in death by two brothers, Herbert Krapf and Jim Krapf. Larry worked as a union carpenter throughout most of his career. He started out working for several small, custom home builders, including Leitner Brothers and Bob Spengel, and retired from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in 2004, where he worked as a carpenter for nearly 20 years. Larry took up golf in retirement and his love of sports, especially basketball, never wavered throughout his life. Whether he was watching Michael Jordan dunk on his opponents, cheering on his granddaughters as they shot a 3-pointer, or dribbling a ball down the court himself in city league, basketball brought him much joy, along with the simple pleasures in life such as dinner with friends, a good book, and spending time with his grandchildren. Larry possessed a kind and humble demeanor and was admired by all that knew him. The empty seat at our table this Christmas will be a painful reminder of our unexpected loss. We find comfort in remembering the good man that he was. A visitation/celebration of Larry’s life will be held on Wednesday, December 28 from 4pm to 7pm at Weber & Rodney Funeral Home, 304 N. Main Street, Edwardsville, IL 62025. A family burial will be at Valley View Cemetery in Edwardsville on Thursday morning. The family requests memorials to SIUE Foundation.
