Obituary Larry Carl Richards was born in Edwards, MS on August 16, 1955, to the late Curtis Lee Richards and Rosetta Gilmer Richards. Larry was educated at Edwards Elementary School and graduated from Edwards Junior High. He enlisted in the United States Army in the year of 1972 and served for 10 years. Larry was stationed in Germany, Ft. Jackson, SC, and various other places. Larry’s specialties in the Army were carpentry and masonry; he was a true handyman. Larry was honored with a Marksman Badge with M-16 Rifle Bar; Mechanics Badge; National Defense Service Medal; Overseas Service Ribbon; Army Service Ribbon and a Good Conduct Medal 2D Award. Larry was a very hard and dependable worker, there wasn’t anything that he couldn’t try to fix. After being Honorably Discharged from the Army, Larry moved to Champaign, IL. After moving to Champaign, Larry became gainfully employed at Caradco in Rantoul, IL. Larry worked for many years at Caradco and during that time he took on a job at the University of Illinois. Larry retired from the University of Illinois as a Kitchen Laborer and also as a Grounds Keeper (he loved that job). Larry enjoyed cooking, especially barbecuing. He thought and would tell you that he was the best in the family. He would grill from 6 in the morning until night to make sure everyone would get some. He also loved to cook his pork chops and they were delicious!! There wasn’t a stranger Larry would meet, he would sit down with anyone to talk about old times and politics. He would sit for hours and watch his favorite westerns over and over again. Larry loved reading and many things that he knew it was because he would read and educate himself. In many people’s eyes, Larry was one of the smartest men that they knew. Larry also loved collecting small model cars; his favorite car was a Ford Mustang. Larry had a smile that was infectious and had a great sense of style; there wasn’t a pair of jeans that he did not put starch on!! Larry loved his Wranglers and his cowboy hats and boots. He was a black Cowboy! Larry accepted Christ at a young age at Green Grove M.B. Church in Edwards, MS. Later in Champaign, he became a member of Macedonia M.B. Church under the leadership of Pastor D.L. Jenkins. The Lord called Larry home on Wednesday, August 3, 2022, at 2:35 p.m. at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, IL. He will be dearly missed and leaves precious memories to be shared by his siblings, Dianne Richards Horton and Mary Johnson; one uncle, Walter Gilmer; two aunts, Elnora Mack and Mary D. Marshall; one daughter, Tina Richards; two nieces, Anitra (Ulysses) Nance and Tiffany N. (Anthony) Wilson; one nephew, Jeremy (Amber) Horton; four granddaughters, Tiana Bell, Brianna Bell, Kianna Taylor, and Larreanna Jones; six great-grandchildren; two great nieces, Ulaya Nance and Luna Landeros Lewis; 4 great nephews, Deon (Brianna) Lewis, Jay (Laisha) Terry, Anthony Wilson, Jr., and Mylo Terry Gaona; special cousins, Willie Earl Taylor, Jessie Richards, and Ella King; special friend, Clara Bright; and, special friend of over 30 years, Pastor D.L. Jenkins. Larry was proceeded in death by his parents, Curtis Lee Richards and Rosetta Gilmer; grandmother, Mary D. Gilmer; his sister, Brenda Faye Richards; brother, Lamar Richards; nephew, Terrance DeWayne Richards; great nephew, Jordan Eugene Wilson; and, ex-wife, Mary L. Richard. A Celebration of Life will commence at 11:00 a.m. Friday at Leek & Sons Funeral Home, 1215 W. Bradley Ave., Urbana. Pastor D.L. Jenkins will officiate. A visitation will begin at 10:00 am until the time of the service. Burial will be held at Danville National Cemetery, Danville.
