Kathleen M. (McNally) Cournoyer, 75, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 9, 2022 at Memory Support of Heritage Hall Nursing Center in Agawam, after a two-year battle with Alzheimer’s Disease which was accelerated by a stroke suffered in March. Born in Springfield on March 14, 1947, daughter of the late Patrick and Roetta (Vaughn) McNally, she was a graduate of the High School of Commerce, Class of 1965. Kathleen worked at Steiger’s and G Fox, as well as the Springfield post offfice to pay for her college education. She graduated from Westfield State Teacher’s College in 1969 with a BA in Education, and was subsequently hired as a 7th and 8th grade English and Social Studies teacher at Marcus Kiley Jr. High in Springfield. She taught there for thirty-four years and also ran the bookstore. Kathleen took courses at the Holyoke Creative Arts Center and later received awards for her artwork. She dabbled in pen and ink, watercolors, and oil painting before choosing colored pencils as the medium she enjoyed most. Not only an accomplished artist, but she also became an excellent calligrapher with many customers. When she retired in 2003 she turned her attention to making custom and very unique greeting cards, which she continued to do until the early stages of Alzheimer’s. Kathleen was also a member of the Western MA Radio Reading Service for the blind and sight impaired. Her family would like to express their appreciation to Heritage Hall for the wonderful care during her stay. Kathleen was predeceased by her siblings, Jimmy in 1966, Timothy in 2012, John in 2020 and Nancy in 2021. She is survived by her beloved husband of fifty years, Richard A. Cournoyer; brothers, Patrick of East Longmeadow and Charles of Springfield; sister, Patricia of Indian Orchard; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Kathleen will be held TUESDAY, JULY 26, at Kozikowski Funeral Home, 565 Front St., Chicopee, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30AM in St. Thomas the Apostle Church, West Springfield. Calling hours are TUESDAY, JULY 26, from 8:30-10AM. Masks are required in the funeral home. Burial will be held privately at a later date.
