Julia Lockwood Manion Gephard Julia (Judy) Lockwood Manion Gephard, a life-long resident of Marlboro, NY, died on December 5th, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center, with her family at her side. Born on September 15, 1941, the second daughter of Grace Lockwood and John Manion, Jr. Judy is survived by her husband of 58 years, William (Bill) R. Gephard, her two children, Mary M. Tomaino (Todd) of Westford, MA; James R. Gephard (Maria Nilsen) of Marlboro, NY; and her four grandchildren Mason and Nora Tomaino, and Benjamin and Nicholas Gephard. She is also survived by her sister Marian Hotopp and brother-in-law, Kenneth, of Howes Caves, NY, and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Robert and Margaret Gephard of Poughkeepsie, NY, as well as several nieces and nephews. Judy was predeceased by her children Eve and George Gephard, and her siblings, John III, James and Jacqueline Manion. Judy graduated from Marlboro High School, attended Syracuse University and Kings County Hospital School of Nursing, Brooklyn, NY, where she graduated with a Diploma in Nursing. Judy devoted her entire nursing career to Vassar Brothers Hospital caring for patients in the ICU starting in 1964, and transitioning to management of the Central Supply Division in the mid-1970’s, until her retirement in 1999. After 30 plus years, Judy turned in her white nurses uniform for her blue jeans and time on the tractor caring for the Manion family farm, where she lived most of her life. No job was beyond her abilities, given her determination and curiosity she could repair anything or come up with an innovative solution. Judy always had a beloved pooch by her side. Even in her later years when she could no longer make her way to Manion’s Pond on foot, she and her Boston Terrier Buster would venture out every day, Judy on her John Deere and her pup walking alongside. Judy’s love for days on the farm superseded any desire to travel, however, she would leave home for her kids to ensure they had summer seaside adventures, or to see them in places life took them. With Bill, she raised two children who live by her life’s example of professionally serving the needs of others and loving Manion’s farm. Judy enjoyed family time, engaging in long chats and debates. She felt strongly about many things, including the model Scag mower she used to faithfully mow the farm, cars she drove, watches she wore, or the newest tool to make a job or hobby go more smoothly. Finding the perfect Christmas tree exemplified her conviction about things for which she cared deeply. Each December the family would traverse the Hudson Valley to find the perfect tree for her to display in the window. She enjoyed photography and music and the gadgets such interests required. Judy always had the finest hi-fi for the best sound possible. She loved all types of music from the latest hits to her mother’s favorite song, “Moon River.” Not a singer or musician herself, she preferred whistling which was always on pitch. Her fortitude in life was beneficial in her final years as she faced multiple health challenges, never complaining, with her family always at her side. The family will celebrate her life on Saturday, December 10th, with visiting hours from 12-2pm at DiDonato Funeral Home, 1290 Route 9W, Marlboro, NY, and burial to follow at Saint Mary’s Cemetery, Lattintown Road, Marlboro, NY. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to DiDonato Funeral Service, Inc., (845) 236-4300, www.didonatofuneralservice.com
