Josephine Murphy Vorda of Evanston, IL, passed away surrounded by her family on March 15, 2022, after a courageous battle with cancer. Josie was born in 1935 to James and Josephine (Carey) Murphy on Chicago’s South Shore, where she was raised. She attended Saint Philip Neri School, Saint Aquinas High School and Saint Mary’s College in South Bend, IN, and eventually moved north to Evanston, where she raised her family. She is survived by her children, Ann (Chris) Johnson and Matthew (Jen) Vorda; grandchildren Alayna and Austin Johnson and Adeline and Hazel Vorda; her brother Tom (Janet) Murphy; brother Edward Murphy; and many nieces, nephews and wonderful friends. She was preceded in death by parents James and Josephine, sister Therese Jones and brother-in-law Gene Jones, and brother James Murphy. Josie was an avid reader, frequent theater- and concert-goer, active member of Saint Athanasius Catholic Church in Evanston, and a generous giver to the organizations, causes and people she loved. She was known for her sharp wit and sense of humor and unfailing devotion to her family and friends. Josie spent much time with lifelong friends from the South Shore, Saint Mary’s and Catholic Charities. She cherished all of these friendships. A successful real estate agent, Josie sold her last house just recently, while still attending the Monday morning meetings at the Coldwell Banker office on Central Street. She served as an election judge in Evanston for more than 50 years. She will be missed dearly by everyone who knew her.
