Winningham II, 60, of Sumner Maine, passed away November 2, 2022 after a long physical illness caused by medical malpractice, and a lifelong, brave battle with alcohol and substance abuse disorder. He was born in Providence Rhode Island, on February 27, 1962 and was the son of Warren Winningham, (West Greenwich, RI) and Margaret (Winningham) Mclaughlin (Carty). (Windham, Maine) the youngest of three children. He grew up between Providence and Windham, and had many fond memories of summers and vacations in New Brunswick, Canada with his family on his ancestral properties, in the area his family settled and built. He married Marguerite Anne Paquette/Gagnon on August 8, 1986 and spent 34 years with her by his side, faithfully caring for him throughout his illness and ups and downs in addiction. He loved her until the day he died. John was a Master Carpenter, and skilled hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed traveling places he had lived and worked, and was always quick to point out jobsites he was on, and things he had been involved in building or working on. He was well known amongst his friend group for being adept at dressing down a deer and really getting the most out of it, doing several a year to help his friends and stock his freezer. Another trademark Winningham skill he enjoyed showing off, was his ability to fillet any size fish and pull the spine and ribs out intact in one piece, tricks he passed on to his daughter and several other friends in his lifetime. Some of his best and favorite memories were of the time he spent with his Cousin Arthur Parker (RI) and wife Robin, going ice fishing over the last 25 years, and in more recent years, going rockhounding with them and visiting at his home. Once he caught a fish and his bait was intact inside, and Art made him a picture that said he was a Master Baiter and many laughs were had over the years at that one. Arthur was one of the few family members who stuck by Dads side when it was near impossible to, and that meant the world to him. John was an honorably discharged veteran, having spent some time in the United States Armed Forces, (Army) and loved talking about his experiences during his time in, and all the things he did, Jungle wilderness survival training in Panama, being one of his favorites. He is predeceased by his daughter, Margaret Marie Walls (Maggie M Walls) of Rockford TN, his father, and many beloved cousins and friends. He is survived by his mother, two sisters, the reverend Karen Secord & her husband Dennis, of Raymond, Patricia Collins & her husband Richard, of Windham, his daughter, Marissa Lee Winningham, of West Paris, Maine, his wife Marguerite of West Paris, stepdaughter Lynne Flagg & husband Aaron of Unity, Maine, 10 grandchildren, (Noah Perreault, John Lee Winningham III) (Elizabeth Fordham, Logan Walls) in Maine, Tennessee, & Florida, and one great grandchild. John has been cremated, and will be interred in Norton, New Brunswick, in his family cemetery, and a celebration of life date is to be determined at a later date. In lieu of flowers or donations, please plant a tree in his name, or send assistance to the Maine Harm Reduction Alliance in Ellsworth Maine.
