View Tribute Book John F. “Hammer” Matusick, 92, of Wapwallopen passed away Monday at Allied Services Hospice Center in Wilkes Barre . Born on October 25, 1929, in Brandonville, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late John A. Matusick and Veronica (Nielubowicz) Matusick. John attended West Mahanoy Township, Shenandoah Catholic and graduated in 1947 from Saint Gabriel’s, Hazleton. He then spent four years in the army during the Korean War. John worked at Dellco Battery in New Brunswick, New Jersey for two years. He returned to Pennsylvania to attend Penn State University-Hazleton and graduated in 1955 with an associate degree in electrical technology. He then went to work for General Motors in Rochester, New York with the research and development department for 11 years. He later returned to Hazleton with his family and worked for Prestolite Wire and Cable as an engineer and maintenance supervisor. His final six years prior to retirement were spent with Certain Teed Corp. in Mountaintop on the assembly line. Quoting, “Good people and no more headaches “. He was a man who loved the outdoors taking pride in gardening and raising cattle. He enjoyed spending time with his sons and his friend’s riding motorcycles. He was an avid football fan, mostly following Penn State and the NY Giants. John was proud to say he was a 25-gallon blood donor and a 15-year AARP Tax Aid. A man led by faith, John served daily masses as well as funeral masses at St. Mary’s Church of Dorrance for many years and was also a major contributor to the church picnics. Preceding him in death in addition to his parents was brother, Al Matusick, sister, Elsie Matusick Sitoski, wife, Peggy Sandrock Matusick, and son, Paul Matusick. Surviving is brother, George Matusick and his wife Rose, children, John Matusick, Hazleton, Charlie Matusick, Weatherly, Mary Coyle and her husband Bob, Hazleton, Ann Matusick, Beaver Meadows, Barbara “Bear” Matusick, Mountaintop, Martha Matusick, Beaver Meadows, Matthew Matusick, Wapwallopen, daughter-in-law, Kelly Youngcourt, Matusick, Wapwallopen, grandchildren, Eric, Nicholas, Amanda, Charles, John, Kevin, and Zack. Great-grandchildren Allen, Gabriel and Lily. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, and cousins. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday morning at 10:00 A.M. from Our Lady Help of Christians Parish, St. Mary’s Church, 3529 St. Mary’s Road, Dorrance (Wapwallopen), PA 18660. Father Joseph Evancho will preside. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Drums. Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation period on Sunday afternoon from 2:00-4:00 P.M. at the Krapf & Hughes Funeral Home – Crematory, 530 W. Butler Drive, Drums, PA.
