He was born in a dug out, and I don’t mean in a baseball dugout. It was a hole in the face of a hill. He was the “oldest of the youngest” of eight children. His family was very poor and eventually loaded up in an old Buick with a mattress on top, 7 children and $17. They were headed to California for a better opportunity. Along the way they lived in tents picking fruit and cotton to get by. His father was an alcoholic and his mother was unable to care for all the children. She got herself and the children back to Oklahoma where family could help. One of his sisters, Mary Sue, was adopted by their aunt and uncle, and Jimmy (age 9) and his younger brother Larry (age 5) were adopted by Frank and Inez Coventry and did not see his other brothers and sisters for years. He finished his schooling at Sunset High School and joined the Marines, serving 4 years stationed at Camp Pendleton and Taiwan. While attending the Cockrell Hill Church of Christ, he met the love of his life, Ivy Margaret Butler and he could not wait to marry her. She was so smitten with his good looks and kind heart that they were married 6 days after her graduation from high school on June 9, 1961 and have been married 60 years and 7 months. They raised 3 children in DeSoto, Texas: Quintin Miles, Ryan Douglas, and Ivy Dee Ann. In 1977 he was reunited with his mother, 1 aunt and uncle, and all of brothers and sisters. It was such a joy for them to all get together again. They loved their mother very much. From then on they made an effort to have a family reunion every 2 years. This had become something he looked forward to with passion. They would often be located where one of his brothers and sisters lived. He and his siblings were so spread out, from Alaska, Vermont, California, Texas, and Oklahoma, they enjoyed seeing the United States on these road trips. He enjoyed the travel so much, he would take his grandchildren all over the country to some of his favorite places. Grand Canyon, Boulder Dam, YellowStone, Manitou Springs, Mount Rushmore, San Francisco, and Alaska were some of his favorites. When asked, he said his most recent favorite was when he went to the Grand Canyon and took the train ride from Williams to Canyon. On this train ride there was a “robbery”. It was a thrill. He was very fortunate to get a job with the United Postal Service and worked for them for over 30 years. After retiring from the postal service he went to work for the City of DeSoto Water Department for another 10+ years. He was a very hard worker and could run circles around all the younger guys. He became very used to walking and continued to walk Spinner Road and more of DeSoto. He knew all the addresses and the people that lived in DeSoto for years. Jim and Ivy attended the Cockrell Hill Church of Christ, and then DeSoto Church of Christ for many years and formed many life-long friendships. The Creekside Church of Christ has been their home for worship for the last 15 years. Jim was our Hero. He took such good care of his family. He was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and Christian. He was in excellent health and tried to get in his 10k steps a day, so we were very surprised when he came down with Covid Pneumonia and passed within 2 weeks time. We will miss him dearly. He is the proud grandfather of: Aaron Coventry, Patrick Coventry, Casey Coventry, Carey Coventry, Stephanie Coventry, and Zachary Taylor and Tucker Taylor. He is preceded in death by his parents: Frank Russell Armistead and Sarah Marie Brandt Armistead, and Frank Coventry and Inez Coventry, Sydney Gene Armistead, Barbara Armistead Marsh, Patsy Armistead Thomas, Larry David Armistead Coventry, Ryan Douglas Coventry.
