Death notice Jean Gloria Smith (McLeod) of Jamaica Plain passed away quietly in her sleep in her room at the Sherrill House in JP with her loving husband of 63 years George R. Smith (“Smitty”) of Jamaica Plain and their son George E. Smith at her side just a month shy of her 89th birthday. Jean was predeceased by her loving family: her mother Alice McLeod, her brother Alden McLeod and her sisters May Shand, Rita Runyon, Esther Wotring, and Alice McLeod all of Jamaica Plain, as well as Florence Costello of NH and Madeline Foti of NY. She was a beloved aunt to many nieces and nephews and got to be a doting grandmother for many years to her son’s two foster children. Jean grew up on West Canton Street in Boston’s South End where she enjoyed many good years and met her husband, who everyone called ‘Smitty’. In the 60’s they followed her Mom and several of her sisters to Jamaica Plain. Jean and Smitty, married in July 1959, were beloved members of the J.P. community throughout their lives there. Jean was a bottling line worker at Federal Liquors of Cambridge in her younger years, where she met her husband. She later worked at Jax Drug Store, Wentworth, and the Arbour Hospital before retiring along with her husband at the Franklin Park Villa coop. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother and an avid bowler and member of the Misfits Bowling league. A celebration of Jean’s life will be held at the Mann & Rodgers Funeral Home, 44 Perkins Street, Jamaica Plain on Monday, October 17th at 11 o’clock. Family and friends invited.
