James S. Hayes, 96, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, passed away at 6:00 am December 21, 2022 at Nature Trail Health Care Center in Mount Vernon. He was born April 24, 1926 in Mount Vernon to the late Steve and Della (House) Hayes. James married Freeda (Williams) Hayes. She preceded him in death. James is survived by his sons, Mark Hayes of Mount Vernon and Mike Hayes of Calvert City, Kentucky; grandchildren, Tyler Hayes of Brookhaven, Mississippi, Valerie Hayes of Mount Vernon, and Melissa Hayes of Calvert City; siblings, Jake Hayes of Mount Vernon, Marvin Hayes and wife, Sharon of Mount Vernon, Phyllis Crowe of Fostoria, Ohio, Irene Madlem of Owensboro, Kentucky, and Barb Graham of Mount Vernon; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, James was preceded in death by his siblings, Walter Hayes, Stevie Hayes, Robbie Hayes, Wanda Mitchell, Marie Pierce, and Betty Brumley. James worked for 20 years for Illinois Central Gulf Railroad. He later worked in construction. He was a loving man and will be deeply missed. At this time, no services will be held.
