James Lee Derra, age 76, of Bennington, NE passed away at Lakeside Hospital on Wednesday, October 19, 2022. He was born on December 6, 1945 in Omaha, NE. He graduated from Benson High School, and attended Westminster College in Fulton, MO, where he earned his bachelor’s degree. Jim married Sharon Wells on June 28, 1975 at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Fonda, IA. They made their home in Omaha and Bennington. Jim’s professional work was in various roles in Accounting and Finance at US West and First Data Resources. Jim was the youngest of 3 siblings. He had a passion for sports all of his life that led to him coaching youth sports for all 3 of his sons (Coach Derra). He loved to play cards, shoot hoops, play tennis, garden, and work out regularly at the JCC fitness center. He always let his sons know who the boss was on the ping pong table. He was a caring man, loved to laugh, and made friends everywhere he went. Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Sharon; sons: Jonathan (girlfriend, Michaela Streit), Jeffrey (Shalena), and Jason (Kaylee); grandsons Kason and Kyler; sister Kay Derra Halverson; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, William and Bernice, and his brother, Bill. Jim’s strong devotion to his family will be his greatest legacy. He will be missed by all who knew him, remembered by all who loved him, and cherished by all whose lives he touched. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to The Society of St. Vincent de Paul, The Sienna Francis House, or St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.
