James, affectionately known as J.A., was born February 11, 1989 in Norfolk, Virginia to Tina Gates and James Blakeney. He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church. James was educated in both Newport News Public Schools and Hampton City Schools and graduated from Phoebus High School in 2007. James graduated from the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank’s Culinary Training Program to cultivate his skill and love of Culinary Arts. J.A. had a passion for music, and was naturally gifted in writing lyrics and song production. James was gentle and soft spoken, but his way with words was perspective shifting. To know him was to love him, believe in him, and know that he truly believed in you. He never missed an opportunity to celebrate his loved ones. He loved his family without end, and he had a heart of gold. James was preceded in death by his grandmothers, Barbara Ann Credle (Nanna) and Glenda Lee Blakeney, and grandfathers, Andrew Chester Hieke and Herbert Jackson, and his Aunt Andrea Warfield. His impactful life will be cherished, honored, and remembered by his mother, Tina Gates; his father, James Blakeney; four siblings, Anthony Ivory, Dominick Davenport, Jaylissa Little, Jakalya Coles; his Aunt Mary ‘Lynn’ Booth (Uncle James ‘Jim’ Booth); his Uncle Ronald Smith (Aunt Lisa Smith); and a host of cousins, family, church family, and friends. James’s final care has been entrusted to Nickelson-Cummings Funeral Home. Viewing will take place Thursday, November 17, 2022 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Nickelson-Cummings Funeral Home 4304 Victoria Boulevard, Hampton, Virginia 23669. A Celebration of Life service will take place Friday, November 18, 2022 at 11:00 AM at Friendship Baptist Church, located at 1135 37th Street, Newport News, Virginia, 23607.
