She was born ninth in a family of fourteen children. Ida adored her close-knit family which included siblings: William (Cooper), Andrew, John, Jr., Jessie, George, Bennie, James, Bertha, Ola, Alice and Lee Jerry (Happy Jack). A set of twins passed in childbirth. The family lived on a farm and raised a variety of crops including cotton. They also had two horses, three mules, chickens, pigs and goats. Each sibling had a role to play to contribute to the success of the household. Ida’s early role was to remove the ashes from the fireplace and to feed the chickens. Alice Carlos Anderson is her only surviving sibling. Ida attended Bethlehem Baptist Church where she was baptized at age thirteen. She was an active and faithful member there until she married and moved to Virginia. Ida attended the Lugoff Public Schools where she excelled. While in her first year of high school, the Depression hit the country and buses were no longer available to take her to the Jackson High School in Camden. Jackson was the nearest high school for black students. Having been a great student, she was invited to assist in the elementary school. In 1939, Ida met and married Willie Boston. After visiting family in New York and honeymooning in Niagara Falls, they settled in Richmond, Virginia. To this union were born five children: Carlene, William, Mary, Martha and Patricia. Ida and Willie joined the Williams Temple C.M.E. Church where they remained until Willie received the call to ministry. The family joined him at the St. John’s C.M.E. Church in Petersburg, Virginia, from 1955-1961, when he became ill. The family returned to William’s Temple During his illness. When the church changed locations, it became Broomfield C.M.E. Church. During more than a half century of service to the C.M.E. Church, Ida has served in the following capacities: Optimist Club, taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, served on the Missionary and Stewardess Boards and served as Chairman of the Trustee Board for many years. Ida enjoyed representing the church at various church and interfaith conferences. Not just content with representing the church, she worked tirelessly to provide financial support by sponsoring many fundraisers in her home and at the church. Whenever funds were needed, she would have a raffle or a tea, give a Chocolate Sip, or a gospel fest. Over the years, her efforts provided the church with thousands of dollars. Ida also worked diligently with her children’s Parent Teacher Associations and represented her South Richmond community at City Hall. God’s blessings have allowed her to retire from both Sears and J.C. Penny as a sales associate. After retirement Ida worked for the Headstart Program and the Richmond Urban League. While Ida served her community and church, the role she cherished most was the one she played with her family and friends. She traveled for the birth of each of her grandchildren and some great grands. Ida attended ever family reunion since 1982 when it was started. She loved cooking and having people over to enjoy her meals. She received many requests for the pound cakes and fruit cakes especially at Christmas time. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Reverend William Allen Boston (Willie), daughter Carlene Jackson (Ceasar) and son, William A. Boston, Jr. (Flora). Ida was also preceded in death by three stepdaughters: Ellen Belton, Ester Reynolds and Marjorie Ernestine Allen. She leaves to cherish her memory three devoted daughters, Mary Johnson Kemp, Martha Coleman (Herb) and Patricia Flannigan. She was the proud grandmother of seven grandchildren, Antoni Boston (Natasha), Alecia Boston, Gene Coleman (Tilda), Michael Jackson (Chantel), Jacye Johnson, Geoffrey Coleman (Katherine) and Ila Flannigan; as well as a host of great grand and great-great grandchildren. She will be remembered by many treasured grandchildren, nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
