July 26 1932 November 13 2022
We celebrate the life and mourn the passing of Howard W. Gromling, Sr. 90, of York, who completed his earthly journey on Sunday, November 13, 2022. Born on July 26, 1932, he was the last surviving child of the late David W. and Daisy K. (Flory) Gromling. He was the cherished husband of Viola A. (Landis) Gromling with whom he shared more than 69 years of marriage. They lived in the house he built for them on the Accomac Road in Hellam Township for most of their married years. Howard attended various one-room schools in the Hellam/Wrightsville area and was a self-proclaimed graduate of “Highmount Corn Cob College”. Jack-of-all trades, he used his carpentry skills for more than 40 years as the proprietor of his own business, Gromling’s Home Improvements. There was no job too big or too small he was not willing to tackle and was always able to figure out a solution to complete a challenging project. Howard proudly served in the Army from 1953 to 1955 and showed his patriotism by having an annual flag display on his property from Memorial Day through Veteran’s Day. He was a dedicated Ford owner and drove Ford vehicles for his entire life. An avid gardener, he delighted in raising vegetables, especially Argent sweet corn, and Kennebec potatoes. His corn roasts throughout the summer were occasions his family eagerly anticipated. He collected scale-sized tractors and amassed a sizable collection of them. He was especially fond of his Allis-Chalmers model B tractor. Howard was a faithful member of Fairmount United Methodist Church for more than 71 years and served as a trustee of the church for many of those years. He was able to use his carpentry skills to complete many projects at the church, parsonage, and fellowship hall. To cherish his memory, Howard leaves his children: Doris (Fred) Reisinger, Howard, Jr. (Holly) Gromling, and Denise Naugle; his grandchildren Chrissy (Justin) Fullmer and Brittany Gromling; and his great-granddaughter Emersyn Fullmer. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive him. In addition to his parents, his great-granddaughter, Reagan Fullmer, son-in-law Ken Naugle, and his siblings Franklin, Frances, Emma May, Herman, Nelson, Ivan, and Melvin, preceded him in death. A celebration of life service will be held on Friday, November 18, 2022, starting at 2:00pm at Fairmount United Methodist Church, 5835 Furnace Road, York. Visitation will take place at the church from 1:00 to 2:00pm. Interment will be in the Highmount Cemetery, Furnace Road. Online condolences can be made at www.etzweilerfuneralhome.com.
