Herby O’Dell Merrick, 94, of Princeton, passed away November 11, 2022, at Caldwell County Medical Center. He was born in Cobb, Kentucky to the late William Lindsey Merrick and Jessie Cordelia Oliver Merrick on September 15, 1928. Herby was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-two years, Jean Doom Merrick, and his ten brothers and sisters. He is survived by his children Michele Pogrotsky (Ricky) of Frankfort, Kentucky, and Monica Oliver (Donnie) of Princeton; his grandchildren Jake Pogrotsky (Jenny), Jessica Pogrotsky Walker (Chad), Laura Don Oliver Wells (Chris), and Will Oliver (Paula); his great-grandsons Colt Pogrotsky, Cash Pogrotsky, Chance Pogrotsky, Crew Pogrotsky, Oliver Wells, Benjamin Wells, and great-granddaughter Caroline Grace Wells; and many nieces and nephews. Herby enjoyed a long career as a barber on Main Street at Herb’s Barber Shop, where he cut hair and gave political advice. He was a proud Republican, served as the chairman of the Republican Party of Caldwell County, and loved to watch Fox News. He was active in the community serving on the Princeton City Council, the Board of the Princeton Water Department, and sponsored a local girls’ softball team, Herb’s Clippers. He was an avid gardener and loved sharing the fruits of his labor with friends and family. He was a fifty-year plus member of Southside Baptist Church and, most recently, Cedar Bluff Baptist Church. Herby served in the U.S. Army from November 1950 through October 1952, achieving the rank of Master Sergeant, and was a member of The American Legion and VFW in Princeton. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Campaign Stars and the United Nations Service Medal. The funeral will be a private service at Morgan’s Funeral Home in Princeton.
