Gyn “Gwen” Dolen Matthews passed away the morning of December 26, 2022 at her home surrounded by family. She is preceded in death by her parents, Estelle and Homer Pickle; sisters, Shirley Finley and Virginia Stuart; brother, Royce Pickle, all of Philadelphia, Mississippi; sons, Yancey Aaron Matthews and Stanley Mitchell Atkinson. She is survived by one sister, Janice Dunn and three children Jerry Atkinson, Mike Atkinson, and Mardi Matthews Bunkley. She had six grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. As a young girl, she played basketball and maintained a love for this sport becoming a die-hard Duke University fan. She loved watching most any college or professional football, basketball or baseball game. She attended baseball Spring training in Florida for well over 20 years, and was the concession stand vendor and scorekeeper for the American Legion Post 1 Bombers for many years. Throughout her life she enjoyed baking cakes, raising parrots, dancing, listening to country and gospel music, having garage sales, crocheting, sewing, ceramics, gardening, collecting coffee mugs, and has put thousands of puzzles together. She worked for F. W. Woolworth Company for 37 years as manager in charge of food services; Lamias Boutique as a sales representative for well over ten years; the Hinds County Election Commission for several years; Dixie Gas and Trustmark Bank in Byram. She praised the Lord in joyous times and relied on the Lord to help her through difficult times in her life. She placed her faith in Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior.
