Gayle Marie Hill-Johnson received her wings on Sunday, November 13, 2022 when God called her from labor to rest. Gayle was born on January 3, 1954, in Newport News, Virginia. Gayle was a highly intelligent and educated woman. She received her public school education in the Newport News School System attending Menchville High School; graduating in June 1972. She continued her lifelong pursuit of higher learning by attending Christopher Newport Community College where she received her Associate degree in Licensed Practical Nursing in 1975. She went on to receive her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Old Dominion University in 1988 and her Master of Science degree in Nursing from Hampton University in 2003. Gayle devoted over 45 years to her passion and lifelong career in nursing. She also served her nation honorably as a nurse and member of the U.S. Army Reserves. She gained her wealth of experience and mastery of nursing working at Hampton General Hospital (1975-1988); Newport News General Hospital (1988-1992); Maryview Medical Center (1992-2003); Director of the Learning Resource Center at Hampton University School of Nursing (2003-2007); and finally, as a Nurse Practitioner at the Southeastern Virginia Health System (PICH Clinic) until she retired in 2019. Gayle was also a distinguished member of the CHI ETA PHI Nursing Sorority and the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. Gayle was a faithful, dedicated, and committed member of Holy Hills of Zion Church, since July 2006. She was a founding member and trustee. She was also licensed as a Minister in 2010 and was a prolific teacher. She taught Adult Sunday School weekly. Minister Johnson was also devoted to a ministry of service to the under privilege and the homeless. But, most of all; Minister Johnson loved intercessory prayer and praising the Lord. Gayle also enjoyed reading and traveling. She never missed a “girls’ trip” with her sister and best friends Barbara Hill, Lindsay Boykins, and Dale Hargrove. Gayle loved her family greatly and was very proud of her daughters and grandchildren. She lived a full and accomplished life, and she will be greatly missed. Gayle is preceded in death by her parents Morris Hill Sr and Mary Hill. She is survived by her husband of 48 years Norman Johnson and two loving daughters Leonda (Mark) Brown and Naneika (Marco) McLendon. She also had six grandchildren Markus/Jarrod; Tyrah; Kailah; Maliyah; Mayah; Marco Jr and two great grandchildren Jayden and Jayce that will carry-on her legacy. Gayle also leaves to cherish her memory eight siblings Barbara Hill; Oliver (Diana) Hill; William (Abbie) Hill; Morris (Renee) Hill Jr; Thomas (Michelle) Hill; James (Clarcy) Hill; Robert (Donna) Hill; and Michael (Justine) Hill as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Viewing will be held Friday, November 25, 2022 from 6 pm- 8 pm at funeral home. Service will be conducted Saturday, November 26, 2022 @ 12 noon at Cornerstone Assembly of God 55 Tide Mill Lane Hampton , VA 23666. Interment will follow at Hampton Memorial Gardens 155 Butler Farm Road Hampton, VA 23666.
