The funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 5, at First United Methodist Church in Huntsville with Rev. Coy Hallmark officiating. Visitation will be immediately following the service at the church. Dr. Hoar was born January 23, 1937, in Greensboro, North Carolina. He is the son of the late Col. Eldon J. Hoar and Lula Mae Zimmerman Hoar of Huntsville. His survivors include his wife of 58 years Joyce D. Hoar of Huntsville; daughters, Lee Ellen Gambrell and husband, Curtis of Greenville, South Carolina, Leslie Hendley and husband, Chris of Huntsville; son, John of Auburn, Alabama; nine nieces and nephews; a cousin; and a sister-in-law. He was preceded in death by his brother, Dr. Jere R. Hoar of Oxford, Mississippi. Dr. Hoar grew up in Oxford, Mississippi, after his father retired from active duty in the Air Force and purchased the town’s newspaper and office supply company. He graduated from University High School and earned a Chemistry degree at Ole Miss, where he was President of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, drum major for the University’s marching band, and active in many campus organizations. He then graduated with honors from the University of Alabama-Birmingham School of Dentistry, and subsequently completed a rotating internship at Ireland Army Hospital and two additional years in the United States Army Dental Corps. He has been in private practice as a Doctor of Dental Medicine at his own Center for Cosmetic and Implant Dentistry in Huntsville since 1966. Throughout his life, Dr. Hoar had a broad spectrum of interests and hobbies that he pursued enthusiastically. His love for the outdoors began as a child. He served as a Ranger at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico as a young adult and enjoyed hiking and canoeing throughout his life. He enjoyed running and competed in marathons and half-marathons well into his 70s. Dr. Hoar was also a collector of and authority on fine antiques, artwork, waterfowl decoys, and historically significant southern pottery. And despite his ties to Ole Miss, he was a dedicated Auburn University sports fan. It made no difference whether it was Auburn football, basketball, or softball – “War Eagle!” But more than anything else, he took the greatest pride in his family and the accomplishments of his wife and children. His nationally recognized expertise in dental implants and cosmetic and restorative dentistry began in 1963 when he participated in an early study for the Army. In 1985, he pursued further education with Dr. Carl Misch, the leading expert in implant dentistry, at the Misch Implant Institute. He subsequently joined the institute staff in 1987. Dr. Hoar then earned Diplomate status in the International Congress of Oral Implantology and was later awarded Board Certification from the American Board of Oral Implantology/ Implant Dentistry. He also participated in the development of a new dental implant system and is co-author of that study. His additional professional and leadership activities have included: Eagle Scout; ODK – University of Mississippi; OKU – University of Alabama-Birmingham School of Dentistry; President – University of Alabama-Birmingham Dental Alumni Association; President – Huntsville/Madison County Dental Society; Associate Professor of Clinical Dentistry – University of Alabama-Birmingham, with appointment to the Residency Program in Huntsville; Staff Member – Misch Implant Institute, University of Pittsburgh; Staff Member – Misch Implant Institute, University of Detroit; and Past President, Board of Directors, Huntsville Museum of Art. He also authored articles concerning North Alabama pottery and the anthropology of Southeastern Indian cultures. Dr. Hoar’s family expresses their appreciation for the patronage of his many patients and the loyal service of his dedicated staff.
