Dr. David Robert Phillips, Sr. March 16, 1941 – October 20, 2022 Share this obituary Send Flowers Upload Photo| View/Sign Guestbook| Send Sympathy Card Dr. David “DOC” Robert Phillips of Jeffersonville, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 20, 2022 surrounded by his loving family after a long, courageous battle with cancer. He was 81. Dr. Phillips was born in Collingdale, Delaware County to Joseph and Bessie Phillips. He grew up in Secane, Upper Darby and attended the Upper Darby High School. He graduated from Muhlenberg College and went on to medical school at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. David met his wife of 54 years, Kathryn (nee) Alba while doing his residency at the former Riverside Hospital in Norristown, PA. After finishing his residency, David went into the US Army as a field surgeon with the rank of Captain. While in Vietnam, David served on the front lines tending to wounded soldiers. He was decorated with many awards with the highest honor of receiving a Bronze Star. Returning from Vietnam, David and Kathryn settled in Jeffersonville, PA to start their family. David started his own solo medical practice in community family medicine and continued that until his retirement in 2017. David served on many healthcare boards and was also Chairman of the Credentials Board of the former Mercy Suburban Hospital. David enjoyed watching any and all sports and was an avid golfer. He enjoyed traveling with his family and was a voracious reader. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren at weekly family dinners and attending their sporting events. David was beloved by all his family, friends, healthcare colleagues and patients, who will always remember how kind, humble and generous he was and especially how remarkable of a husband, father, grandfather and brother he was. He will be missed by everyone who knew him. David is survived by his wife Kathryn, his daughter Cassandra Doyle (Patrick), and his son David Jr. (Shannon). He was the loving grandfather of Caylynne Mankafas (Mike), Patrick and Jack Doyle and great grandfather of Mia and Julian Mankafas. He is also survived by two brothers, Alan (Helen) and Fred (Rae) Phillips, and a sister Virginia (AB) Southall. David was also the beloved uncle to many nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited on Thursday October 27th, Visitation from 10 to 11 AM with Funeral Service to begin at 11:00 AM at The Washington Memorial Chapel, 2000 Valley Forge Park Rd. (Route 23 in Valley Forge National Park), Valley Forge PA 19481. Intermen will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his name to the Vietnam Veterans of America.
