Daryl “D.K.” Smith, age 97, of Olivia, MN died on November 16, 2022 at the Olivia Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. Private services will be held at St. Aloysius Cemetery in Olivia. Arrangements are by Dirks-Blem Funeral Service of Olivia. Daryl Keith Smith was born on January 9, 1925 to Richard and Clara (Neal) Smith in Lakefield, MN where he was raised. D.K. served his country in the United States Navy during WWII. He was stationed on an air craft carrier in the Pacific Ocean. After the war he returned to his hometown. D.K. was united in marriage to Geraldine Zelinko on October 18, 1948 and they moved to Olivia in 1952. They had three sons: Jeron, Damian, and Shawn. Together D.K. and Geraldine owned and operated Damian’s Jewelry for over 25 years in Olivia. They sold their business when Geraldine was diagnosed with M.S. so that Daryl could stay home to take care of her. He was a true Patriot and proud of his military service. Being a member of the American Legion for 67 years, he was active in community events for veterans, taught children and adults about the American flag, and sold and repaired flags for area businesses. D.K. was devoted to his faith and his church, St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Olivia. He was a dedicated volunteer in his community; helping with Habitat for Humanity, planting dozens of trees to replace those that died due to Dutch elm disease, and using his talents to repair the building for the Christian Community Outreach Center. D.K. will be remembered for his love of his family, community, and country. Daryl is survived by his children: Jeron (and April) Smith, Damian (and Nancy) Smith, and Shawn Smith; his grandson, Aaron (and Jana) Smith; his great-grandson, Nealan Smith; and many friends. Daryl was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Geraldine; infant daughter, Caeli Smith; and his ten siblings.
