Combs, age 85, passed away on November 17, 2022, peacefully surrounded by family at Stonerise Parkersburg, after a long illness. He was an Army Veteran and loved anything associated with the military, was a lifelong resident of Spencer, West Virginia, graduate of Spencer High School, Mountain State Commercial College, and Glenville State College. He retired December 2001, as Vice-President and Compliance Officer of First National Bank of Spencer with 41 years of service. He was a long-time member of First Baptist Church of Spencer and a member of the WoodmenLife Insurance Agency. He was also a real estate agent for Board DePue Realty, Spencer. David played sports at Spencer High School during his high school years and was a member of the Teenage Firefighters in Spencer from 1942-1957, was past president of the local Chamber of Commerce, recipient of Jaycees Young Man of the Year during 1967. Organized the 1st annual Jaycee July 4th celebration in 1967 and organized the annual “Nut Run” held during the Black Walnut Festival. He was in charge of bingo at the annual WoodmenLife Christmas banquets and made it fun. David was a great family man and loved spending time with his children, granddaughter, and extended family. He was an avid runner and ran in 5K runs throughout West Virginia. He ran in the Charleston Distance Run every year from 1973 through 1984. He loved playing golf with his golfing buddies. He participated in the Roane General Hospital Foundation Golf Tournament for several years. He was a collector of old western and civil war memorabilia. He loved feeding wildlife at our home, of which he had plenty to feed. He delighted in keeping the grass mowed and taking care of outside chores. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Clara Combs; daughter, Michelle L. Wilt (Jeffery); one granddaughter, Ava Briella Wilt (Ava called her grandad, “Poppy”); sisters-in-law, Jane Combs of Marietta, Ohio, and Sharon Jarvis of Letart, West Virginia; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. David was the son of the late Beulah Grace and Frederick Earl Combs. He was preceded in death by his son, Michael David Combs formerly of Morgantown; brother, Frederick E. Combs formerly of Marietta, Ohio; brother-in-law, David E. Jarvis formerly of Milton, West Virginia; father-in-law, Otto Jarvis; mother-in-law, Helen Jarvis both formerly of Looneyville, West Virginia. A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church, Saturday, December 3, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Mark Wood officiating. A gathering of family and friends will be from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 3 at the church. John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer is in charge of arrangements.
