Smock, 76, of Carlisle, passed away Wednesday, December 28, 2022, at UPMC Carlisle. Born in Mechanicsburg, she was the daughter of the late Stanley and Joanne (Weidaw) Minnich and the wife of 55 years to Leslie C. Smock. Cathy graduated from Boiling Springs High School in 1964 and Polyclinic Hospital School of Nursing in 1967 with her degree as a Registered Nurse. Cathy was always a caring and giving person. A huge part of who she was involved serving others as a caregiver and nurse for over 40 years. She began her career as a nurse at a Chicago hospital. Her true passion, however, was serving residents in Nursing Care Facilities. Upon returning to Pennsylvania, Cathy was a charge nurse at what was known as the Cumberland County Home, Carlisle, Director of Nursing at green Ridge Village, Newville, Administrative Director at the former Caledonia Manor, Chambersburg, Sarah A. Todd Memorial Home, Carlisle, The Village of Laurel Run, Chambersburg and retiring from HCR Manor Care, Chambersburg. After retirement, she continued to care for family, friends, neighbors and fellow church members. Cathy was a member of Grace Baptisit Church of Carlisle for over 50 years. She loved music and was known for her beautiful Alto singing voice, having been a member of her church choir, a member in Cantate Carlisle, and singing in the Community performance of “The Messiah” annually. In her spare time, she also loved traveling with family and friends and was an avid quilter and crafter, creating many beautiful items which she shared with others. But what brought Cathy the most joy was her family. She loved being a wife, mother, and grandmother. She never tired of hearing of the accomplishments of her grandchildren, wanting to attend every event, be it a school performance, football or lacrosse game. In addition to her husband Leslie, Cathy is survived by her son Richard M. Smock, his wife, Deanne, of New Oxford; her daughter Amy E. Brewer, her husband, Daniel, of Mechanicsburg; her grandchildren Austin Smock, Sheyanne McSparran, her husband, TJ, and Noah Brewer; her great granddaughter Charlotte and her brother Michael K. Minnich, his wife, Jody, of Carlisle. Cathy was preceded in death by her brothers Gary Minnich and Mark Minnich. Relatives and friends are invited to her funeral service 11 a.m. Thursday, January 5, 2023, at Grace Baptist Church, 777 W. North Street, Carlisle, PA 17013, where the family will greet guests after 10:30 a.m. prior to the service. Interment will follow the service in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, PA at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Cathy’s name may be made to: Grace Baptist Christian School at the address above.
