1927 2022
Obituary of Betty Jane Bankert Phelps, Betty Jane Bankert age 95, died peacefully on Tuesday August 23, 2022 at Clifton Springs Hospital with her loving family by her side. There will be no prior calling hours. Friends are invited to attend a graveside service on Tuesday (Aug. 30) 11am at St. Francis Cemetery in Phelps with Rev. Brian Fellows officiating. A celebration of life will follow the cemetery service at the Phelps American Legion at Noon to which family and friends are invited. It is requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations in memory of Betty be made to the Phelps American Legion Ladies Auxiliary 1346 NY-96 Phelps, NY 14532. Betty was born on May 20, 1927 in Geneva, NY the daughter of the late David and Jessie Miller Reid Jr. She was a member of the Phelps American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and a life member of the Buckhorn Sportsman’s Club. She was also a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Phelps. Over her lifetime Betty worked at various manufacturing facilities the last being Sarah Coventry Inc. in Newark. Betty was a prolific knitter and crochetier. There was nothing she could not master in her knitting. She was also an avid reader. Betty enjoyed traveling, having gone all over the US, parts of Europe and on many Caribbean cruises with her husband and family. She and her husband had a winter home in Crystal River, FL, which they enjoyed for many years. In addition, they had a camp, surrounded by family member’s camps in the hills of Dundee, where many gatherings, campfires and reunions were held over the years. Visitors were always welcomed and encouraged at all their properties. Betty loved her trips to the casinos no matter where she was. It wasn’t the gambling, it was the game of chance that intrigued her. She also enjoyed playing euchre with family and friends and was often the best player at the table. But above all else, first and foremost was the love of her family and her time spent with them. Betty possessed a gift for connecting with others, instilling laughs, smiles and much life reflection. Although she loved her visits with family and friends, this was reciprocated two-fold. You couldn’t spend time with this amazing lady and not feel better for it afterward.
