NEWVILLE. . .Betty Shelley Kirkland, a resident of Newville, died early Saturday afternoon, October 8, 2022, in the Brookwood Baptist Medical Center in Birmingham. She was 93. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, October 12, 2022, in the Newville Baptist Church with Reverend Hugh D. Kirkland, Jr. and Reverend Larry Elliott officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends from 9:30 until 11:00 A.M. Wednesday in the church sanctuary. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Newville Baptist Church, P.O. Box 13, Newville, AL 36353. Mrs. Kirkland was born in Newville and moved to the Tumbleton Community with her family as a young child. She returned to Newville at the age of six and lived there the rest of her life. Mrs. Kirkland was a member of the Newville Baptist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star. She was retired as a Secretary from the Newville Vocational School. In earlier years, Mrs. Kirkland was employed by the Henry County Board of Education at Newville High School and Headland High School. She was preceded in death by her father, Joel Shelley, her mother, Jewell Shelley Hicks, her step-father, Jackson Hicks, her husband, Hugh D. Kirkland, Sr., a son, Dudley Kirkland, sisters, Vivian Wright (Gerald), Agnes Kirkland (Oren), Jean Sprouse (Curtis), Martha Frances Givens (Byrd), Jay Shelley (Dot), and Joan Woodham (Wendell), a daughter-in-law, Theresa Kirkland, and a son-in-law, Charles Jackson. Surviving relatives include three daughters, Frances Jackson, Newville; Janet Guest (David), Birmingham; and Lisa Kirkland, Lake Seminole, GA; three sons, Bubba Kirkland, Newville; Hap Kirkland (Debby), Foley, AL; and Reverend Hugh D. Kirkland, Jr. (Kathy), Newville; a sister, Yvenette Parrish (Harold), Birmingham; eighteen grandchildren, Ashley Kirkland, Natalie Osborne (Joe), Chuck Jackson, Candi Hanners (Fred), Barkley Kirkland (Jana), Cleve Kirkland, Danielle Kiehl (Chris), Trae Baugh, Garrick Kirkland (Kenna), Patrick Kirkland, Shane Lindsey (Lori), Claire Guest, Daniel Guest (Alex), Hugh Kirkland, III, Blake Kirkland (Amanda), Michaela White (Lee), Raden Stewart, and Harrison Mullen; thirty great-grandchildren, Five great-great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews. Serving as active pallbearers will be grandsons and grandsons-in-law.
