Betty’s Obituary Betty B. Justie (née Brown), age 98, passed away peacefully Dec. 7, 2022, at Atria Park of Glen Ellyn. She was born October 22, 1924, to Fred and Lillian (née Guseman) Brown and lived the first 94 years of her life in Wheaton, including attending the same elementary school and high school as would her children years later. Having selected the “secretarial” path at Wheaton High School, she graduated first in her class in 1942. After graduation, she started a nearly 15-year career as a legal secretary for several prominent attorneys and law firms in downtown Chicago, commuting daily by train into the city. In 1950, Betty met Thomas Justie of Villa Park on a blind date, and they were married in 1951. After living the first couple years of their marriage with her parents, they built their own home just four blocks away, where they raised their family and lived for 65 years until moving into assisted living in Glen Ellyn in 2018. Betty left the working world in the late 1950s when they started a family, then returned, working part-time in a medical office, fifteen years later after both children were in school. After retiring, she and Tom traveled frequently throughout the Midwest, along with annual winter trips to Siesta Key, Florida, for many years. Betty was preceded in death by her sister, Doris; sister-in-law Colette; and her husband of 69 years, Tom. She is survived by sons Kevin (Julie) of Arlington Heights and Tom “Keith” (Jeannie) of Geneva; grandchildren Brian (Anna McGovern), Rachel, Ben and Lilly; nephew Brandt (Kathy) Wollert; and grandnieces Kortney and Stacey (Dane) Peterson. Betty was an avid Cubs fan, and before marriage she and her sister would often attend Blackhawks games at the old Chicago Stadium. For over 40 years, Betty played cards one Friday evening a month with three high school friends, outliving all of them. Betty was a wonderful cook, with her holiday pumpkin bread a favorite of her children and grandchildren. And she often offered this sage advice: After retirement, go out for lunch every day; it gives you a reason to get dressed and get out of the house! She and Tom lived by this adage, inherited from her parents, into their late 80s. Betty’s family would like to express their gratitude to the wonderful caregivers at Atria who took such good care of Betty and Tom in their last years, as well as a special thank you to hospice nurse Natalie, who so compassionately guided Betty and her family through her final days. Services and burial will be private. Memorials may be directed to St. Paul Lutheran Church (515 S. Wheaton Ave., Wheaton, IL, 60187), which Betty attended her entire life, making her its longest-attending member; or to the hospice of your choice. Or, simply have a glass of your favorite red wine or a delicious piece of chocolate in her memory! Read More
