Bernice Parrish West (88) passed away at her home on October 31, 2022. Bernice was born in Blount County, Alabama to the late Floyd and Effie Parrish on November 7, 1933, and was married to the late Calvin Leo West on June 1, 1963. Bernice had many nicknames–two of which were “Sunshine” and “Flash.” She was always a ray of sunshine and usually had a camera within hand’s reach wherever she went. Her most important nickname was “Maw” or “MawMaw West.” She loved being called Maw the most because her favorite people, her family, called her by that name. MawMaw was the most humble and selfless person you would ever encounter; to know her was to be blessed. A fierce prayer warrior, she loved her special time with God–be it praying for her family or listening to Southern Gospel hymns. MawMaw also loved gardening of all kinds and cooking for her family, but she most enjoyed spending time with all of her family members. She loved playing, being silly, and making everyone laugh. Her Christmas traditions will always be remembered and will be especially greatly missed. Bernice is preceded in death by her husband, parents, and four siblings. She is survived by one sister, Patsy Parrish, her two children, Debbie Rush (Grant) and Michael Martin (Carol), her nine grandchildren; Jacob Shook (Alexandria), Hayden Shook (Ashley), Abigail Shook, Michael Martin Jr, Matthew Martin, Joshua Martin (Lia), Holly Martin, Matthew Rush, and Jillian Rush. MawMaw is also survived by thirteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Pallbearers are Hayden Shook, Jacob Shook, Michael Martin, Michael Martin Jr., Joshua Martin, and Allen Crepps. Honorary Pallbearers are Benjamin Shook, Noah Martin, and Tyler Martin. MawMaw’s visitation and funeral will be held at MasseyLine Church of God, 4109 MasseyLine Church Road, Pinson, Al 35126. Visitation for friends will be Wednesday, November 2, 2022, from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm and the funeral will be Thursday, November 3, 2022, at 10:00 am.
