Addie Bernadine “Bernie” Berglin October 22, 1934 – December 24, 2022 Share this obituary Send Flowers View/Sign Guestbook| Send Sympathy Card Addie Bernadine was born at home in Walla Walla on October 22, 1934, to George and May Livengood. She was raised in Walla Walla by loving parents who wanted a large family; Bernie was the fifth of six sisters. The Livengood family spent their early years on a small farm where they tended gardens, chickens, and cows and had their very own horse to ride. Bernie started school at a small, two-room school called Braden School, then attended Jefferson School and Valley Chapel School before graduating with honors from Walla Walla High School in 1952. She made her choice to serve Jesus when she was 11 years old and was faithful to that vocation her entire life. God was the center of her life, and she loved the worship, gospel, and bible study gatherings. For many years, a worship meeting was held in her home on Sunday mornings. After graduating from high school, she went to Washington State College (WSU) on a scholarship to study nursing. There, she met Dave Berglin, and they fell in love and married on February 7, 1953, in Walla Walla. Bernie supported her husband in his studies, and a couple of months before he graduated, Jayme was born in April 1954. Dave’s career as a mechanical engineer first took them to Fort Wayne, Indiana, followed by Schenectady, New York, where Bruce was born in March 1956. The following year, Dave moved with General Electric to Boston, Massachusetts, before another year brought another move for the family, this time taking them to Albany, New York. Wherever they lived, Bernie and Dave always opened their home to family and friends, and they developed friendships that lasted their lifetimes. On a family vacation to Walla Walla in 1958, Dave applied for a position at the Walla Walla Corps of Engineers and was hired; the family then moved to Walla Walla, where Bernie and Dave called home for the rest of their lives. Brian was born in January 1959, and then John was born in June 1962, completing their family of six. Their beloved ten grandchildren were precious to Bernie and Dave. They relished time with their grandkids and were always ready to babysit, feed and play games with them. Many wonderful memories were made with Nannie and Pop-Pop! Bernie welcomed everyone into her home and served many delicious meals to friends and family. Nieces and nephews came during the summertime to stay for a few days—sometimes a few weeks—and she enjoyed having them. Everyone who visited Bernie’s home knew where the “famous cookie jar” resided in the kitchen freezer. It was always full (until it was emptied!), even when she moved from her home to an independent living facility in 2021. She loved baking sourdough bread and cinnamon bread, which were always shared and enjoyed by her family and friends. She loved gardening; her large gardens were filled with vegetables, flowers, and berries. She was fastidious in keeping an immaculate yard and clean home and was always ready to feed and host anyone at a moment’s notice. She was an avid walker, loved to read, and enjoyed socializing with family and friends. After Dave retired, they enjoyed traveling together. Bernie was preceded in death by her loving husband, Dave, in 2017; her parents, George and May Livengood; and her sisters, Shirley Green, Genie Nichols, Lela VanNortwick, and Lola Berglin. She is survived by her younger sister, Sandi Scholl (Don); her daughter, Jayme Crow; and her three sons, Bruce (Dee), Brian (JennieLynn), and John (Kjerstin); ten grandchildren, Lindsay Burnett (Quinten), Megan Cook, Kristen Berglin (Adam), AJ Berglin (Ali), Fallon Weber (Jason), Cayde Berglin, Rachel Berglin, Sarah Berglin, Josh Berglin, and Hannali Berglin; and seven great-grandchildren, Daisy Burnett, Brody Burnett, Zander Cook, Sophia Berglin, Emerson Berglin, Willow Weber, and Haven Weber. Her many friends and extended family were very special and important to her, and she kept in close contact with them. She remembered their birthdays and loved to write letters, cards, and notes—a welcome surprise in the mail for the recipients. She will be remembered and greatly missed by the many lives that she touched throughout her life.
