John’s Obituary John Robert Austin, 79, of Tuscaloosa, passed away on Tuesday November 24, 2020 at Hospice of West Alabama after a brief battle with cancer. There will be a graveside service at Tuscaloosa Memorial Park on Sunday November 29, at 1:30 p.m. for family and close friends, with Jerry Lake and Joe Kines officiating, followed by a visitation open to all at Tuscaloosa Memorial Chapel from 2:30-3:30 p.m. COVID restrictions will be in effect at the visitation. John is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Libby Austin of Tuscaloosa, as well as his two sons Kevin Austin (Kim), of Northport, and Kelly Austin (Kris), of Bella Vista, Arkansas. In addition, John is survived by his brother Larry Austin of Hot Springs, Arkansas, as well as his four grandchildren Ashlee Austin Lewis (Garret) of San Diego, California, John Robert Austin II of Northport, Taylor Sloan Austin of Fayetteville, Arkansas, and Kate Austin of Bella Vista, Arkansas. John was preceded in death by his parents, Sloan and Dorothy Austin of Pine Bluff, Arkansas. John was born July 14, 1941 in Garner, Arkansas and moved to Pine Bluff, Arkansas at an early age. He attended college at the University of Arkansas and graduated from the University of Arkansas in Little Rock. John worked for International Paper Company in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, then in Mobile, Alabama, and finally in New York, New York, before taking a job with Gulf States Paper Company in Tuscaloosa in 1983. He worked in Information Services with Gulf States Paper until his retirement in 2000. John was an active member of First Baptist Church Tuscaloosa where he served on numerous committees and he also had taught Bible classes in both the College and International Departments. He spent several years on the Board and as President of the ARC of Tuscaloosa. He served on the Board of Directors of the Tuscaloosa Community Soup Bowl. John was a volunteer with Hospice of West Alabama, as well as an avid golfer with his senior golfing buddies at North River Yacht Club. Some of John’s favorite times were golfing with his son and grandson, as well as watching all of his grandchildren’s activities and sports. Honorary pallbearers will be the Agape Sunday School Class of First Baptist Church Tuscaloosa.
