1SGT JOSE LEROY ABEYTA SR. Jose L. Abeyta, aka Papa Tate, died July 28, 2020 at home from natural causes. He was born November 17, 1933 in a log cabin in Weston, Colorado, the son of Frank and Oclires Abeyta (Vigil). Jose (Joe) graduated from St. Mary High School, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He joined the U.S. Army and served in a variety of locations in Europe and the U.S. he also served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He retired from the Army at Fort Carson, Colorado in 1972 after 23 years of service. Joe then joined the ranks of the Air Force Civil Service and worked in Colorado and Texas. Joe married his childhood sweetheart Evangeline (Vangie) S. Abeyta on February 14, 1953, and they were married for 52 years until her death in 2006. They traveled the world with the Army and finally settled in Denver. In August 2016 Joe married Maria M. Abeyta (Marino) and he welcomed her children Kimberly and Heimy. Joe was a lifelong member of the Veterans of Foreign wars. He was extremely patriotic and proud of serving his country. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, and watching the Denver sports teams. In addition to his parents Frank and Oclires Abeyta, he was preceded in death by Evangeline Abeyta (wife), Jose Leroy Abeyta Jr. (son), and his brothers Frank, Sam, Zack, William, and Martin. Surviving are his children Gail Fanelli and her husband Richard from Cheyenne, Wanda Sandoval and her husband Gary from Castle Rock, Michael Abeyta and his wife Sheri from Loveland, and Andrew Abeyta and his wife Jeanette from Lakewood. Joe is survived by his sister Roselee Poole from West Virginia and a brother Victor Abeyta. Grandchildren Sheena, Amanda, Pamela, Rachel, Eric, and 5 great grandchildren. Services will be held at Holy Trinity Catholic Church 7595 Federal Blvd., Westminister, Colorado. 80030 , on August 12, 2020 at 9:30, officiated by Father David Gomez-Limon. Burial will be at Fort Logan National Cemetery following the mass. Reception will be held VFW Post 4171, 15625 W 10th Ave Golden CO 80401. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Tunnel to Towers, or Wounded Warriors. Read Less
