Hansen, 78, passed away on August 23, 2020 at home surrounded by his family after a four-year battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. John was born in Portland, Maine on August 10, 1942, a son of Jack and Dorothy (Powers) Hansen. When he was seven years old, he moved to Newport where he attended Newport Schools. Before he graduated from Newport High Class of 1964 he joined the Newport Fire Department and was a loyal member for over 50 years. In 1964, he met the love of his life, Alfreda Lorom, and swept her off her feet from a good friend. They married in 1967. Shortly thereafter he started working for the State of Maine performing maintenance at the Newport Armory (now Newport Recreational Center) where he remained for almost 25 years. After the armory closed, he went to Skowhegan Armory for several years and then traveled to Bog Brook in Gilead for almost five years. He was then assigned to Camp Keyes in Augusta traveling to different armories around the state. He also enjoyed being a school bus driver for Pittsfield, Etna, and Dixmont. He always had many stories to tell about his time as a school bus driver, custodian, security officer, and firefighter. He is survived by his beautiful wife of 53 years, Alfreda Hansen; sister Christy Lorom of Corinth; daughter, Deanna Thompson of Detroit, son, Phillip Hansen and fiancee, Tracey Woodbury, of Newport; Trish Hansen and husband, Stephen Crandall, of Brunswick; grandchildren, Jade Morse and Shawn Thompson, who were the light of his life from the day they were born; a large loving family, as well as many, many friends who turned into family. They were all very special to him and he was a very proud Papa! If you knew John, you would know he was one of the most hard working and caring men around. He was the first to drop everything and come running. Whether he was coming over to help you when you locked yourself out or needed help with a broken-down car, John would do anything for anyone. When you needed a good talk, he was there. If you needed an early morning wake up call, he was more than willing to do so even if he had to set an alarm on his day off. He always worked hard and had several jobs to provide for this family. A celebration of John’s life will be held 2 to 4 P. M., Saturday, September 19th at the Newport River Walk. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Newport Fire Department, 21 Water Street, Newport, ME 04953. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal, Newport.
