Mary’s Obituary Mary Davis, of Lexington, passed away Sunday evening , July 26, 2020, at home after a prolonged illness. Mary was born February 12, 1930, to Elizabeth F. Dauch (Pierce) and Wade W. Dauch in Sandusky, Ohio. She was a graduate of Sandusky High School and attended Carlton and Oberlin College’s. She later obtained her Masters in Social Work from Wake Forest University. Mary was well known in the community as a caring person who worked to help those in need. She was not afraid to stand up for what she believed and advocated for civil rights for both women and minorities. In addition to marching in parades and writing letters to the editor in her spare time, her work included manning the phones for the Davidson County Suicide Hotline, serving as director of the Davidson County Battered Women’s Shelter and as a bereavement counselor for Hospice of Davidson County. Mary volunteered for the United Way, Meals on Wheels, and helped start the Habitat for Humanity Chapter in Lexington. She was a long-time member of Grace Episcopal Church where over the years she was a member of the Vestry, served as Senior Warden, led the Youth Group, and served on numerous committees. Mary’s passions were caring for others and travel. Her passport was stamped with exotic places and every year you could count on stories of her and her husband Gray’s most recent adventure. Her last few years left her with limited mobility but still the want for adventure. Her final Earthbound adventures included trips to Colorado, New York City (to see Hamilton), and Hawaii where she stayed at the same hotel her parents stayed in on their honeymoon in 1929. Mary is survived by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a son, James Gray Davis, of Salisbury; two daughters: Elizabeth Davis Piper and husband, Stephen, of Atlanta; and Sarah D. Davis of Yellowstone, WY; five grandchildren, Elizabeth Davis, Mary Ann Carson, and Sarah, Mathews, and Brian Piper; two great-grandchildren, Dakota and Miles; and a number of nieces and nephews. A private burial service will be followed at a later date by a Memorial Service. In lieu of flowers Mary requested that memorial gifts be made to Habitat for Humanity of Lexington, NC.
