John Waverly Hawkins May 26, 1942 – July 22, 2020 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook On July 22, 2020, in his loving home and surrounded by his family John Waverly Hawkins, affectionately known as “Sonny”, lost his battle with Lung Cancer at the age of 78 years old. John is survived by his doting wife Patricia Ann Hawkins. Together they had a blended family of 8 children – Kim, Sonni, John, Derrick, Faith, Moses, Felicia and Guy who predeceased him. Their blended family produced 19 grandchildren and 11 great- grandchildren. John was also preceded in death by his Mother Lillian Mills and a sister Yvonne Bynum. He leaves behind a brother Marc Anthony Bynum and a sister Angela Hamilton. John was born on a Cherokee Indian Reservation in Pennsylvania on May 25, 1942. Soon after his birth his family relocated to Newsom, Virginia where he was raised by Wilbert and Elizabeth Hawkins. A country boy, curious and adventurous he would eventually enlist in the United States Army when he was 18 years old. He rose through the ranks with skill and honor and retired from his military career in 1969 as a Corporal Officer. He served two tours during the Vietnam War and earned two Purple Hearts. He also earned one Silver and one Bronze star. Upon his return home from the military John settled into life in New York State. He worked as a Manager at several dry-cleaning stores, as an Elevator Operator at Metropolitan Hospital and later as an Inventory Clerk at Gristedes Supermarket. John enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, long drives and passing time watching his favorite television programs like Law & Order, CSI series and Forensic Files. Though he was not a true sports person at heart, he enjoyed it when his brother- in-law Harry (Mickey) Moore would fill him in on Sports, especially football. John was an exceptionally bright man who was well versed on several subject matters. He was a man who never mixed his words and spoke with much conviction. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and all who knew him.
